Partnership opportunities

Abstract ملخص: To build from the Wikipedia Zero program the P&GR team are preparing to support partnerships around; App preloads, knowledge over SMS/USSD, improve digital literacy, and work on offline support. This year, the Foundation decided to discontinue the Wikipedia Zero program as part of efforts to evolve how we work with partners to address barriers to participating in free knowledge around the world. The Wikipedia Zero program was first created to address one barrier to participating in free knowledge globally: high mobile data costs. During the program’s six year tenure, we partnered with 97 mobile carriers in 72 countries to provide access to Wikipedia to more than 800 million people free of mobile data charges. In the past couple of years, the Partnerships & Global Reach team, in collaboration with other teams at the Foundation, conducted research to better understand the full scope of barriers to using Wikipedia around the world. Awareness is one of the key issues we identified, in addition to limited local language content which inhibit the discovery and use of our projects. We remain committed to creating impactful partnerships that align with our own values and direction for the Wikimedia movement’s future. The findings from our research results have given us several ideas for where we may take our partnership work next; we will focus on partnerships that i) can address access barriers, ii) increase awareness, iii) develop capacity and improve digital literacy skills, iv) promote equitable participation of all people, especially marginalized groups, and v) integrate our projects with third party products or services to amplify their distribution. At this session, we will share the partnership opportunities the Partnerships & Global Reach team is pursuing and their potential impact toward bridging the knowledge gap.
