Abstract/description of your session

[edit]

Due to the crowd-sourced nature of Wikipedia, it is possible that some topic areas are better represented than others, while some topics are completely missing from WIkipedia. In this context, it is important to identify, measure and bridge these knowledge gaps in order to increase the relevance, credibility and completeness of Wikipedia articles. This session aims to introduce the techniques and tools that can be used for identifying content gaps on Wikipedia, and suggestions for bridging these gaps. This session is largely built from the speaker's experience in working on knowledge gaps related to Vaccine Safety on English Wikipedia.

In 2022, the Wikimedia Foundation Research Team published a white paper for addressing the knowledge gaps on Wikimedia projects. This document serves as a guide for measuring and bridging knowledge gaps across Wikimedia projects. Similarly, English Wikipedia contains a guide for mapping the content gaps. This session will be designed in accordance with the principles and best practices outlined in the above documents, in relation to a case study where the knowledge gaps related to Vaccine Safety were analysed.
