Understanding the dynamics of the Wikimedia Movements from the lens of a volunteer contributor[edit]

From one sense, today’s wikimedia cultures are the continuation of the wikiwikiweb community. Then Wikipedia took birth as a complimentary project of Nupedia and now it has turned into a whole movement in a quite organic way. The session will present the practices of the wikimedia communities and their underlying philosophy, which factors currently affect the interactions between the stakeholders inside the movement and the system’s possible systemic flaws. The session will also shed some light on the importance of strengthening non-affiliate organized groups to fight against the systemic failures and introducing diversity and equity.

The session will prompt the audience to think about the existing social setting inside the movement and thus will create a more meaningful bonding with the local movement and its contributors. It will also help the audience to strengthen their bonds and ensure their participation in the UCOC, Movement Charter and the overall movement strategy process which works are now taking place to refine and formulate our movement culture and give a strong base to the movement.

The session will hopefully provide some insights into the movement's core sociodynamics and prompt the audience to think about them and find the hidden systemic flaws there. The session will also prompt the audience to witfully guide those mechanisms of the social settings in a planned way while contributing to the movement to get the best out of their volunteer work.
