This request for micro-funding to WikiIndaba 2023 has just been submitted by Uncle Bash007 on 19-09-2023 and is awaiting support.

Description

[edit]

The Wikimedians of Northern Nigeria User Group is a group created to capture and influence Wikimedia activities across Northern Nigeria. It focus in reaching out to various minority communities across northern Nigeria. The Hausa language is the major language in the area. However, there are hundreds of other ethnic groups with thousands of speakers all over the region such as Fulani, Tiv, Ighala, Kanuri, Nupe Yoruba among others. Most of these ethnic groups are not aware of ; and are not included in Wikimedia activities. This user group is aimed at including these minority groups in Wikimedia acitivies as well as guiding them on how to contribute to Wikipedia and other Sister Projects.

This project will tend to invite all the major minority groups to join Wiki Indaba 2023 and engage them in training on how to edit and contribute to different Wikimedia projects.

The event will be carried out through the following strategies:

  1. Online: There will be an online campaign where various ethnic groups will be invited for an introductory session on Zoom.
    • Participants will be given data support to attend the virtual event and live stream the main event.
  1. Offline: Local in-person meet-up will be organized where participants (atleast 1 from each minor ethnic group) will be invited to join the local in-person event.
    • We will go for a round trip on some major monuments for pictures to be added on commons

Outcome

  • We hope to train them how to edit Wikipedia
  • Open a new language Wiki (if applicable) for language that met Wikimedia requirements.

Jury decision

[edit]

Dear Uncle Bash007 and colleagues from Wikimedians of Northern Nigeria User Group,

We are sincerely grateful for the time and effort you invested in applying for a micro-grant for WikiIndaba 2023. Your interest in contributing to this event is highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, we have to inform you that your application was not selected for the micro-grant. We received an overwhelming number of quality applications (77 applications for only 7 grants), which made the decision process extremely challenging. Given the constraints, our focus has been on projects from underrepresented communities or groups that lack on-site representation at the conference. The team decided therefore to provide the grants only to countries where there are no user groups at the moment.

Though your application was not selected, we greatly value your interest in WikiIndaba 2023. To stay engaged and catch all the latest updates, we invite you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and instagram. Additionally, we encourage you to subscribe to our YouTube channel, where we'll be sharing conference highlights and key sessions. We also suggest reaching out to your group members who will be participating in the conference, so they can share experiences and learnings with you.

Best regards,

Organizing Committee, WikiIndaba Conference 2023 -- WikiIndaba2021 (talk) 15:12, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
