The Wiki Re-Imagine Lagos Project is a project of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria (Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation) in collaboration with the Lagos State Government to digitally preserve the state's heritage sites, culture, festivals, and tourist attractions through various Wikimedia projects and events.

Background

Lagos State, formerly Nigeria's capital, boasts a rich history, vibrant economy, and technological advancements. The collaboration between Wikimedia Nigeria and the Lagos State Government aims to leverage Wikipedia's platform to preserve the state's cultural heritage and promote sustainable tourism development. This project marks the first official placement of a Wikipedia-In-Residence with a state government in Nigeria and the African continent.

Objectives

  • Digitally preserve Lagos State's heritage sites, culture, and tourist attractions.
  • Organize photo and content submission contests to create a gallery of quality photos of Tourist Attraction points about Lagos state.
  • Conduct thematic edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia articles about Lagos State's notable festivals, events, people, government policies, tourist assets, etc.
  • Place a Wikipedia-In-Residence at the State Ministry of Tourism, Art, and Culture to coordinate activities between the state and the wikimedia community.
  • Beautify tourist attractions with customized plaques embeded with Wikipedia URLs of each site.
  • Fulfill Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, and sustainable.
