Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania is a group of Tanzanian volunteers who serve to extend the reach of Wikimedia activities in the country. The 2018 have been a good year for Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania as it was officially approved by Wikimedia Affiliations Committee as a user group hence different Wikimedia projects succeed to take place in Tanzania as shown in dashboard below.

This event focused on training of Wiki-commons project by sharing knowledge on how to contribute to it especially photo uploading as one of the capacity building towards upcoming Wiki Loves Africa project in Tanzania. Also the event focused on sharing knowledge on how to use the uploaded photos in info boxes as preparation of next upcoming WLA event which focused on photo addition to the already written Women articles in Wikipedia.
26 January 2019 Wiki editors vs Notable Women Wiki editors Tanzanian Wikimedians and notable women to discuss Wikimedia project issues This event brought together Tanzanian Wikimedians and some of the Tanzanian notable women from different fields to have discussion on trending matters that relates to Women such as the content gender bias existing online.These notable women will be given some time to give brief presentation on the pressing issues for women from their respective fields (arts, technology,politics).After that there will be some for the editors to interact with the notable women to have some discussion to come up with ways on how we can overcome the challenge"Lack reliable referencing materials to write about Women in Tanzania.
04 February 2019 Launch of WLA 2019 Wiki Loves Africa 2019 Awareness creation This was an event which recruited the mixture of professional photographers and the Tanzanian Wikimedians .There was a sharing of the knowledge on how to Capture good photos as well as to better contribute to Wikicommons during the Wiki Loves Photo Contest 2019.
11&17 February, 2019 Photo hunt Shooting photos for WLA 2019 Contest This was an outdoor activity that aimed at finding areas where relevant photos that goes with PLAY theme can be founded. The participants went to different areas where they thought of getting those photos.
7th March 2019 Wiki Loves Women & WikiWomenTz(WikiGap) Editathon towards International Women's day This wwas the 8th WLW event in Tanzania since its Launching in August 2018. It was the collaboration between Wiki Loves Women project in Tanzania and WikiWomenTz (WikiGap) organized by the Swedish Embassy in Tanzania.The event was held at the residence of the ambassador for Swedish Embassy in Tanzania and focused on getting some insights, views ,suggestions on possible ways on how to overcome the Challenge of lack of enough reliable sources to write about Tanzanian women as well as uploading some women bios into Wikipedia.
4 April 2019 Arts & Feminism Editathon Adding and improving Women contents to Wikipedia Art + Feminism -Wikipedia Editathon-Tanzania was an event that invited Tanzanian Wikipedians and other prospective participants to gather for updating of Wikipedia entries on art and feminism. The focus of entries was expansive where participants contributed to articles on technology, comics, social advocacy and women biographies.
6 April 2019 Wiki Loves Women-Tanzania ̈9th WLW Event Her 2 Her Chat between Tanzania notable Women and Tanzanian Wikimedians Her2Her event was designed for a positive purpose of connecting women from difference experiences and background, hear out loud their story and their views.This event managed to invite six powerful notable successful women within their fields in many ways, and their impact within the society is seen everyday within Tanzania and beyond. The event was very interesting as Wiki editors got to interact physically with the people they sometimes write about them in WIkipedia.
11 April 2019 Astronomy Editathon Updating latest Swahili vocabularies in Swahili Wikipedia This was an event that aimed at updating some old Swahili vocabularies that are used in Swahili Wikipedia articles. The main task was replacing those old / less known astronomy vocabularies with the new and most useful ones.
12th to 14th April 2019 Woubzena Jifar & Asaf Bartov visit to
Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania
East Africa Wikimedia projects Training Workshop This was a historical and the first visit of Wikimedia of Wikimedia Foundation staffs (Woubzena Jifar & Asaf Bartov) to the East Africa Wikimedians Community. The event took place in Tanzania where Wikimedians across east Africa gathered in Tanzania for two days Wikimedia projects capacity building training Workshop led by Asaf Bartov and Woubzena Jifar. One of the idea emerged during the workshop was that there should be East Africa Wikimedia Community to increase the collaboration between these countries in terms of doing Wikimedia projects.
30th April 2019 Wiki Loves Women Finale Wiki Loves Women project concluding (10th) event This was both the happiest and saddest day to Tanzanian Wiki editors for concluding the Wiki Loves Women project in Tanzania and for being not sure whether same or similar project will come again respectively. Generally the event was about celebrating the achievements obtained during the whole time Wiki Loves Women Project took place in Tanzania.
11 May 2019 Astronomy Photo Selection Editathon Selection of photos from Wikipedia
to be used in Swahili Astronomy Dictionary
This was an event organised by Jenga Wikipedia ya Kiswahili in collaboration with Wikimedia User Group Tanzania and Astronomy Association of Tanzania (ASSAT) so as to choose some of the Astronomy photos from Wikipedia to be used in Swahili Astronomy Dictionary being in preparation by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)
6th July 2019 Movement Strategy Salon in Tanzania Discussing Wikimedia 2030 strategic direction This was an event that aimed to get the ideas, advice, recommendations and views from Tanzanian Wikimedia projects contributors towards attaining Wikimedia 2030 goals.Two Thematic areas namely Community Healthy and Resource Allocations governed the participants discussions.
03rd August 2019 Youth Strategy Salon in Tanzania Discussion on Wikimedia 2030 Goals This was the second strategic Salon in Tanzania where by Youth from different organizational entities such as Buni Innovation hub, Creative Commons Chapter of Tanzania gathered to discuss two Thematic areas which were Capacity Building as well as Product and Technology.

8th March 2018 WikiWomenTz (WikiGap) editathon Writing about notable Women in Tanzania This was an editathon with the aim of adding Women related content to Wikipedia as the effort to bridge the gender gap existing between Women and Men online especially in Wikipedia. The editathon was organised by Swedish Embassy in collaboration with Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania.
June 20,2018 Wikipedia Editathon 2018 Creating Wikipedia awareness to Tanzanian community Due to increase of new Wiki volunteers there was a need to raise more awareness and familiarity of Wikimedia projects.This event focused to explain more of Wikimedia movements and projects as well as basic training on how to be part of the movement.
08th September 2018 Launch Of Wiki Loves Women project in Tanzania Adding content about Tanzanian notable Women into Wikipedia This was the very first day Wiki Loves Women project in Tanzania kick started. The event was scheduled to be at Buni hub, but due to power cut off participants migrated to Seedspace where the event succeed to be done.
September 2018 Wiki Loves Monuments-Tanzania Capturing photos of Tanzanian Monuments The event recruited professional photographers to participate in photo contest with the focus of Tanzanian recognized Monuments
20 October 2018 Wiki Loves Women Tanzania Women in Politics Writing about women in politics and activists Women in Wikipedia It was all about writing about women in politics and activists women. A goal was to have at-least 20 articles added and after that all of articles to be reviewed and refined from 20th to 27th October 2018.
17 Nov 2018 Tanzanian Women in Wikidata and Cinema Creating Women Swahili Wikipedia biographies relating to Cinema Was about creating Women Swahili Wikipedia biographies related to Cinema. Also there was improvement of WikiData occupation labels by translating the wikidata cinema related labels from english to Swahili.
24 November 2018 ASSAT editathon Preparation of Swahili Astronomical Vocabularies The event was about creating new Swahili Astronimical vocaularies that will fit the nowdays usage of Swahili Language. This was done as effort towards preparation of Swahili Astronomical dictionary in collaboration with the department of Swahili Language from University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)
01 Dec 2018 Tanzanian Women in Wikidata and Cinema-I Improvement of WikiData occupation labels The event focused on discussions and improvement of WikiData occupation labels by translating the Wikidata cinema related labels from English to Swahili.The program was conducted to support Wikipedia:WikiProject AfroCine/Months of African Cinema in Swahili.
15 December 2018 Wiki Loves Women Workshop and Editathon-Tanzania Training Wikipedia editing skills to all participants The program was divided into two parts where by the first session was a workshop focused on training Wikipedia editing skills to all participants with much focus to newbies (especially Women).The second session was an ediathon to write about few selected names of notable women in Tanzania where by the main focus was dealing on perfecting the already published Women articles on Wikipedia.

  • Through the Wikimedia Projects activities the awareness of Wikimedia projects in Tanzania has increased.
  • The Capacity of Tanzanian Wikimedians to contribute to Wikimedia projects has Increased.
  • There was increase in experience on hosting local and regional Wiki events.
  • The number of partners has been increased.
  • There was success in ensuring the bridging of Gender gap while implementing the Wiki activities.
  • Increased number of Women related content to both enwiki and Swahili Wikipedia
  • Increased cooperation with government sectors in doing Wiki projects such as cooperation with the University of Dar es Salaam and Astronomy Association of Tanzania in creation of Swahili Astronomy vocabularies.
  • Increased cooperation with other Wiki contributors communities

Challenges

  • Lack of Developers who can help to create relevant Wiki functionalities that fits Swahili Wikipedia (ed]g. Some times enwiki infoboxes doesn't work perfectly to Swahili Wiki)
  • Difficulties in approaching some of the potential partners as not all understands/have enthusiasm to the Wikimedia Foundation mission to open knowledge.
  • Slowness in processing rapid grants for different Wiki activities
  • Sometimes the issue of Venue becomes an obstacle to Wiki activities especially when all prospected venues becomes booked the same time the Wiki activity has to take place.

Future Plan

  • Continue to implement wiki projects in Tanzania
  • To become an Organizational entity (Chapter)
  • To form the East Africa Wiki Community
  • To participate in international Wiki conferences

Conclusion

  • We would like to thank WMF for the continued support to its projects in Tanzania through our group. Also we would like to appreciate the cooperation from other Wiki communities such as Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda. Finally we invite more cooperation with other more communities to do more relevant projects in Tanzania.
