Wiki for Minorities/Disabili-Ties Programme

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Disability and ties go hand in hand in this programme

The Disabili-Ties Programme is an initiative within the Wiki for Minorities (WfMin) project aimed at expanding the existing content in Wikimedia projects about people with disabilities. The term comes from a play on words between disability and ties.

By creating articles, searching for information and taking photographs, users want to raise awareness about the challenges presented to people who live with some type of disability around the world, adjusting the work to their own reality that surrounds them, so the project is presented with enough versatility and dynamism for it.

Approach[edit]

Our scope ranges from the historical topics of each of the disabilities to work on, such as relevant milestones, notable people who live/lived with disabilities or who made valuable contributions to improving the quality of life of disabled people, to legal aspects and also contemporary social and cultural aspects and their associated problems, such as discrimination and the demystification of prejudices, the lack of health coverage, among others. Likewise, we advocate for effective inclusion within societies of people with disabilities, enforcing their civil rights in each jurisdiction where we work, in addition to the acceptance of people with disabilities as they are, in order to positively influence their self-esteem and development of quality of life.

Details[edit]

Activities will take place throughout the year and may be online, in-person and hybrid. The work areas are mainly Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and Wikisource.

The topics to be worked on are the different disabilities that affect people, such as:

  • Visual impairment
  • Hearing impairment
  • Reduced mobility
  • Muteness

Activities[edit]

  • Editathons: Sessions can be online, in-person and hybrid (recommended).
  • Photo walks: One or more users meet in a location and plan a walking route to photograph different situations of disability.
  • Hackathons: Wikidata users come together to create and improve items related to disability.
  • Wiki tours: Wikimedians plan a travel route to document content that includes more than one location.
  • Visit to a disability-focused organization or event: Users coordinate a visit to a disability-related organization or event, which is involved in activism, raising awareness or working directly with disabled people and addressing their needs, in order to obtain agreements to be able to upload content to our platforms with free licenses.
