The activity/project

[edit]

Tell us about your proposed project. What will you get achieved with this time?
Describe why you think this project is important, and how the project is different from your normal volunteer contributions.

The beginnings of the press in the Belgian Congo date back to the 1900s. Before colonization, there was a press adapted to the time: the tam-tam, the griots, the horns transmitted messages.

The information press at that time included missionary periodicals and the private or commercial press. Among these missionary periodicals, one could distinguish magazines intended for foreign countries, and newspapers intended for the natives (Congolese).

The first official publications in the Congo were written in the Congo but printed abroad.

Today, it is too difficult to find these newspapers as well as the publishing houses (or printing houses) of the colonial period, which are part of the history of our country which is DR Congo.

Our concern would be to find out how to guarantee the availability and accessibility of this information for our future generations and/or researchers.

In order to do so, we are going to :

1. Survey all the newspapers for all the existing printing houses during the colonial period in the DRC ;

2. Create a bibliography for Congolese newspapers and their publishers during the colonial period on Wikidata.

We expect at creating 150 items

Your qualifications

[edit]

Describe how you (and, if applicable, your team)are able to achieve this project. What skills, expertise, and motivation do you have which will enable you to succeed?

This project will be carried out by a team composed of 4 active contributors and founding members of the user group Wikimedians of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On the first day, we will all start with the first phase of the project which consists of a census of all the newspapers for all the existing printing plants during the colonial period in the DRC.

And on the last two days, we will all start encoding on Wikidata all the elements found in order to finally obtain a bibliography on Wikidata of Congolese newspapers and/or their publishing (printing) houses during the colonial period; and why not also improve the existing items related to our subject if time permits us.

As we said, "ensuring the availability and accessibility of this information for our future generations and/or researchers" is our source of motivation.

Proposed activity dates

  • Support Support The project contributes to the closure of the Africa gap in Wikidata and to the documentation of DRC’s cultural heritage. The result of the project is also an asset for every African Studies Library (If desired, I’ m ready to volunteer and to check the sources at library of the African Studies Centre in Leiden/NL). • Support Support the subject is very interesting in the sense that it will allow us to very well retrace and preserve the library of the history of the press (newspapers and/or printing house) of the colonial period of the drc. especially using SPARQL. --TshiluChris (talk) 16:54, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
