The project[edit]

  • Cita con Bolivia ()

Description[edit]

Describe the project or event. We inted to help librarians understand the benefit of citing Bolivian books and how that helps increase the value on librarians. At the same, we intend the hold events to bring people to learn about the authors, both online and on site, to add cites on Wikidata and on Wikipedia as well.

  • Cochabamba.
Recent Wiki Loves Monuments events collected loads of pictures from Cochabamba, a city in the heart of Bolivia. It is crucial we get references to the work of people that created this works and how they are regarded in local literature. Our long term ally, the Facultad de Arquitectura de la UMSS (University's architecture department) will help us hold events to get local authors both on Wikipedia and on Wikidata.
  • La Paz. The Culture Center for the Spanish Embassy in La Paz has already expressed their support to activities related to enhance the reach of their library to get new users. We plan to hold on site and online events to help people add books from their private collections of books, to strengthen the body of cites from Bolivian authors.
  • Santa Cruz. Local library in Warnes is our main objetive, but we understand that many libraries across Santa Cruz may join us once they learn about the project. Since the events will be hold online and on site, we understand that our reach will be greater than before.
  • Other cities. We understand there that other libraries will get interested in the project, and we forsee that many will join our efforts to make their repositories more visibile to the public, and plus, that they will work with local people to help them get their cites online.

Motivation[edit]

Why is this project needed? What will it solve or improve? The lack of Bolivian authors, to use as reference in articles about the country makes it difficult for editors to write specific content about Bolivia. They mainly focus on geography and history. Books in Bolivia are usually published in small numbers as low as 200 hundred, and they don't usually get reprinted. Usually these books are sent to libraries or remain hidden in private collections that are owned by people who frequently have good internet connections. Our aim is to get both these categories to become more visible, so other people can look them up and use them to reference Wikipedia articles.

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project?

  • At least six (6) online events to learn about Wikidata.
  • At least three (3) cowork spaces in three cities of Bolivia
  • Work with three (3) cultural institutions: Las Flaviadas (La Paz), Universidad Mayor de San Simón(Cochabamba), Voces Indígenas Urbanas(La Paz) UMSS Architecture Department(Cochabamba), Biblioteca Municipal de Warnes (Santa Cruz), among others. Due to the current situation it is difficult to secure aliances, but we are working in parallel to get as many instituciones as possible.

Measures of success[edit]

What are criteria you will define success for your project, and how do you intend to measure for them? What are your targets for these measurements?

  • At least 300 new cites about Bolivian authors.
  • At least 30 new documents of a private historical library catalogued and registered on Wikidata and some pages digitalized on Wikimedia Commons
  • 20 people able to edit and add citations on Wikidata
  • 6 mentions about the project on written press
  • 12 thank you audios that can later be used for future campaings.
  • 6 librarian personnel able to teach about Wikidata to their local communities.
  • At least one webinar about the value of the local conservation of historical documents and papers, with a profesional restourer. making focus in the need of make the register and open publication of the cites and data to make more accesible and visible the small locals libraries.

Community[edit]

Who is your target audience for this project, and how will you ? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project?

  • Local libraries are in need of getting in touch with their former readers with engaging activities. We will provide a means of communicating with their former attendees, and also to make their work more visibile to the media. December and January are usually slow for newspapers and TV Stations which will give us and advantage to advertise the events.
  • People with private book collections find themelseves pride themselves on having a great collection of books on a given region or subject. We will help raise awareness among them about the value of citing Bolivian authors which in turn will add more value to their collections.
  • Librarians look for the books to be read, and cared for. Through our work, we will raise awareness about their citing abilities and how important they are in terms of preserving Bolivian literature. That's so based on the fact that books that are not read, will soon become irrelevant and their knowledge will be lost.
  • Young students and researchers. In Bolivia the scholar year was closed to prevent the COVID-19, so the students have no ways to complete the learning pattern and the schoolar program of this year, to count with free information of cites and docuemnts to make investigations, libraries to research are very important now.
