Description[edit]

Describe the project or event. Ghana had its Independence from the British colonial rule on the 6th of March, 1957, it was the first sub-Saharan African country to have gained its independence. The country's independence was spearheaded by events and personalities that made the process uncomplicated as compared to other African nations who were also struggling for their independence. However, information on these events and personalities are not accessible online.


Motivation[edit]

Why is this project needed? What will it solve or improve? Attempt by the Wikimedia community in Ghana to help increase content on the pre-independence history have been met with difficulty due to the following : 1. Contributors mostly cite news/blog based websites. 2. Most articles are tagged for speedy deletion or moved to draft due to poor citations.

Solution[edit]

In partnership with a resource person from the Ghana Library Board and an experienced Wikipedian, we will train volunteers on how to reach books, journals and newspapers that contain information on pre-independence events and personalities online and offline and how to create a Wikidata item with them.

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project?

  • Will organize a 1-day training workshop for 20 Wikimedia volunteers that will focus on Wikicite. The training session will be streamed live on the social media platform of the Ghanaian Wikimedia community.
  • Will organize a month long editathon for participants of the training session.
  • Will organize four online training session (once a week) for participant of the editathon
  • Create a bibliography for History books, journals and newspapers on Wikidata and link them with existing Wikipedia articles.
  • Increase the quality of articles of notable events and personality involved in the pre-independence struggles on English Wikipedia with citations


Measures of success[edit]

What are criteria you will define success for your project, and how do you intend to measure for them? What are your targets for these measurements?

  • We would create a dashboard which the team would use to monitor contribution of various participants through collaboration
  • At the end of the project we would ensure that we make over 200 existing and new articles which are variable and reliable.
  • At least 200 Wikidata items have been created for books, journals and newspapers that contain useful resource on the pre-independence history of Ghana.

Who is your target audience for this project, and how will you ? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project?

Our target audience are new and old editors who are passionate about contributing to free and Open Knowledge through creation and making citations available for referencing of existing and new articles.

  • A promotional flyer will be created and promoted on the various social media platforms (Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, Twitter) of the Ghanaian Wikimedia community.
  • We will get participants engaged through a WhatsApp group that will be created for the project.

  • Food - Food for the team and participants, during the training workshop there would be lunch breaks and refreshments. US$ 285.00 will be allocated to User:DaSupremo to organize online training sessions for participants.
  • Promotion/branding- Promotion/branding will include Wikimedia branded souvenirs and Covid-19 protective gears (Nose Masks, Face shield, hand sanitizer).
  • Transportation- Will cover the transport cost for team members and resource persons.
  • Awards - participants would be awarded with gift vouchers based on their contributions to the project. First takes $50 worth of gift vouchers, the second takes $30 and the third takes $20. The top female contributor would be awarded ($30) to encourage Women to contribute more to the project. All participant will be awarded with a certificate of Participation
  • Data - Internet data available for the entire project, thus to support team and volunteers.
