Wikimania 2022/Scholarships/Nigerian Wikimedians for Sustainable Development/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals[edit]

The scholarship received was used for Wikimedians for Sustainable Development members in Nigeria. This availed them the opportunity to attend the 2022 Wikimania being the first Wikimania event for most attendees. The members of the Wiki Loves SDGs Nigeria who are also members of WSD, which is the "motherly recognised" community. With the approved funds, the attendees has a great learning experience and we are pretty sure of the huge outcome this would yield. Everyone had a great experience to learn new things, share their knowledge, expose them to countless opportunities with Wikimedians around the world during and after. Some are already putting in interest for programs that are currently open to applicants, like Wikimedia Classroom TOT, OUtreachy Internship, to mention a few.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Have afforded at least 30 participants the opportunity to attend Wikimania for the first time, our community is mostly full of editors who have not participated in any of Global Wikimedia events since we started in 2022. We had 45 participants. We exceeded this target due to members who already got scholarships from the foundation were not included in the application which was not intentional
Host satallite events for two days and post-Wikimania physical eventome. Three satallite events held. Three sattalite events was held during the Wikimania as we add applicants from five different states within Nigeria.
At least 20 participants would receive scholarship to enable them participants virtually and also for their local transportation during the satallite event and post Wikimania 20 scholarship applicants were short-listed. Twenty attendees were given scholarships to attend the first day sessions, post physical sessions virtually after physical meetup for satallite events as the schedule was not favourable due to time zone and also for their local transportation
Have supported 5 participants who would not have made it without Childcare support the opportunity to attend the event. 5 participants were short listed. Five community members received Childcare Support.
Like to expose our community to projects, lessons and opportunities from across the movement This was achieved during the local meetup for the three days. We had a knowledge sharing platform, panel discussions and individual presentations that were tailored towards achieving the same goal.
Like to networking and mentorship with other Wikimedians from across the movement This target was achieved. During the events attendees were linked with members of the community with needed skills and knowledge.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The location selected was a very popular location and the team that worked together to organise the watch party did a great job in terms of assisting first timers on how to use the virtual platform. Community members who were

  • What did not work so well?

Community members who received scholarship from the foundation were not included in the budget, this is due to the fact that this was our first Wikimania and we did not factor in the participants who got satallite support (individual scholarship) and we could not deny their interest to participate as our community members. Members also travelled down from five states within Nigeria to attend the sattalite event at Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Additional number would be included. Although the application was made early but the COT delayed in their decision making and the bank details used also gave us a little issue which made us to have the funds few days to the event (week of the events). In the next Wikimania, I would advice the COT to work with a timeline for their decision making and also stick to it. Also, the financial team should also prioritise the disbursement for early preparation for the local event/sattalite and excellent hosting.
