Wiki Loves Sustainable Development Goals Nigeria aims at bridging the SDGs gap that exists on Wikipedia with a focus on Nigerian related content, this event will bring together Civic Organizations and Youth Networks, working to reach the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria both physically and virtually.

Our first onsite program took place on 27th March, 2021 where every participant was taught how to create and improve content on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria on Wikipedia and Wikidata (the future of Wikipedia).

Purpose[edit]

There is a substantial lack of content in this area which became obvious during the participation in the Wiki Loves SDGs Online Edit-a-Thon in 2020.

SDGs[edit]

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were built on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals while including new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities. The goals are interconnected – often the key to success on one will involve tackling issues more commonly associated with another.

SDGs and Nigeria’s future are intertwined, they can’t be separated. We can only solve the gap that exists by creating content around SDGs for Nigeria on Wikipedia.

Proposed work to be carried out[edit]

Creating, updating and improving SDGs articles on topics relevant to each SDG with a focus on Nigeria contents:

  • Recruiting SDGs advocates based in Nigeria or those interested in the actualization of the Global Goals in the 36 States of the country.
  • Quantifying the quality of the Wikipedia articles in question before work starts (conducting a baseline study) and after the editing has been completed. Quality metric indicators to be used have been defined and are a mixture of quantitative and qualitative parameters.
  • Compiling a list of local SDG leaders who merit a biography on Wikipedia. Writing biographies for Wikipedia has been proven a successful goal for WikiGap, on which we can build further. Priority will be given to Women Leaders in the cause of the edit-a-thons.
  • Deciding on which Wikipedia articles to work on based on their relation to SDG and the importance of the topics in Nigeria.

Edit-a-thons:[edit]

  • Translating the findings into Wikipedia content.
  • Recruiting Wikipedia editors.
  • Organizing edit-a-thons at event locations to be determined.

Coordination and communication:

  • Project coordination, including establishing collaboration with several NGOs, Sustainable Development Goals Advocates to leverage SDG expertise
  • Wikipedia instruction & guidance of all others, quality assessment, project communication.
