Project Plan[edit]

With support from the Ohio Wikimedians User Group and Wikimedia DC, we are planning to host an in-person meetup for Wikimania 2022 in Pittsburgh. The region has untapped Wikimedians and GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) professionals who are interested in meeting and collaborating on Wikimedia topics, technical contributions, and more. Wikimania 2022 provides an opportune time to connect these people in real life around the virtual conference. Pittsburgh provides a central and affordable location for Wikimedians from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other upper midwest locations to travel to. We have several connections in the Pittsburgh GLAM, open data, and technology institutions with which we hope to collaborate to host the event and attract GLAM professionals and new Wikimedians.

Activities[edit]

What Wikimedia movement affiliate do you represent?

How will the funding requested support your community’s participation at Wikimania?

  • Administrative or operational costs for to distribute funds to community members, such as transfer fees
  • In-person meetups that coincide with Wikimania activities (food, beverage, meeting space)
  • Printed artwork, conference t-shirts or other swag/merchandise for participants

If you are planning to distribute funds to community members, such as by running a local scholarship program, please provide additional detail on how you will organize this process.
Please provide a summary explaining the following:

  • how you will invite community members to apply for funding,
  • the criteria you will use to determine eligibility, and
  • the processes or services you will use to distribute funds.

This description does not need to be comprehensive, but should generally explain the process for how community members will receive funds or support to participate in Wikimania. For support on eligibility criteria, feel free to review this reviewer's guide for previous Wikimania scholarship programs.
If you are not distributing funds to community members, please write N/A below.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, East Liberty branch
Carnegie Museum of Natural History

We would like to provide scholarships to offset reasonable travel and lodging costs for participants. We expect people to drive from or take a train from areas outside of Pittsburgh.

  • Anyone who registers for and attends the event will be invited to apply for reimbursement.
  • Eligibility requires that participants:
    • Constructively participated in the conference
    • Primary purpose for the travel was to attend the event
  • Participants will be provided an application form (likely via Podio) to answer eligibility questions, and to provide their costs and receipts
  • In the event participants request more than what is budgeted, funds will be distributed evenly.

Outcomes[edit]

Please provide a range or estimate for the number of participants the funding will support.
It is OK if this is estimate is based on limited information, but we want to have an idea of how your activities will support community participation in Wikimania.

  • 25 people participate in person at our event
  • Partnerships with technology, GLAM, or open data institutions; we are reaching out to Carnegie libraries and OpenStreetMap for example
  • Publicity and planning for other projects and events, in person and to some new participants

Budget[edit]

How you will use the funds you are requesting? Please use the following categories for your expenses. Don’t forget to include a total amount, and update this amount in the Probox at the top of your page too!
