Wikimedia is the organization which operates Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikisource, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, and the Wikimedia Commons. If you're active on one of these projects, please participate in the Wikimedia Collaboration of the Week (WM-COTW) -- a new effort to bring participants from the different projects together in activities that will benefit the entire Wikimedia Community and strengthen its shared identity.

WM-COTWs should satisfy the following criteria:

  • should allow many people to participate, or at least a subset that is not project-specific (e.g. designers)
  • should be beneficial to all projects, or to the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation
  • should be coordinated on Meta (this wiki)
  • should not be too specific to one project, unless there are compelling reasons for it to be a Wikimedia COTW

Example collaborations: writing and translating the user manual used by all wikis, highlighting a new or underdeveloped project, working on promotion materials.

The current WM-COTW is prominently linked on the "Community Portal" (or equivalent) of all participating wikis.

The first Wikimedia COTW was launched on Monday, April 4, 2005. After a hiatus, the second COTW needs to be discussed and voted upon:

Procedure

Any proposal needs to be described at [[Wikimedia COTW/Proposal name]]. That page can also be the coordinating page for the collaboration, should it be choosen.

The procedure for choosing a COTW is simple. Add your proposal below. People can support as many proposals as they want. At the end of the current COTW, the nomination with the most support will be chosen. You need a user account on Meta to vote.

Summary: Meta has a thousand pages of translation, a thousand pages of actively-used or proposed-idea content, and a thousand pages of half-obsolete or archival content. These pages should all be better organized; the main page should clarify the kind of work going on here, and Meta's place in the {wikimediafoundation, wikipedia, other wikimedia projects} Pantheon should be described clearly.

Summary: Let's try to refactor this discussion and come to some conclusions. We need to decide what is holding us back from implementing this, whether technical limitations, the NPOV policy, or a decree from the GodKing.

Summary: I really like the Wikipedia Opentask Template but seeing the item "Help clear the backlog for moving dictionary articles to Wiktionary" makes me think that an Opentask Template that listed open tasks on all participating wikis would be useful.

Summary:: The policy about images is diferent in each wikipedia. If we improve this it will cause less problems than now, and we will be sure we can use the images of others wikipedias in the ours.

Discussion

  • Image policies cannot be fully equalized, although it would be useful, due to different legal standards in particular countries. For instance enWiki would be forced then to resign from media offered basing on the fair use rights - and now it is hardly imaginable, of course unless you convince them to do that. (or simply change legislation in EU and elsewhere... ;) ) Everything because of right to copy and further use given by i.e. German and Polish Wikipedia as the part and parcel of Wiki freedom. It´s true, but for example, en spanish wikipedia we don´t let images in fair use (I think) but in english it´s avaible. There are some policys very differents and a page Images policy can be a base to negociate (every wikipedia will have their own rules, but the most of them will be the same).--FAR 16:40, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
It's false, all Wikipedias is under United States law because the Wikimedia Foundation is based in United States. Well... all Wikipedias can adopt fair use license. The future is incredible: we will can use the images of others wikipedias in the ours! -- Marcelo 20:32, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Summary: I've installed lots of MediaWikis for myself and others. Would be great to have a basic set of core base Help: pages to be able to wiki-import after installation. Yes, I know that I could point users to the online help pages at wikimedia.org , but alas not all my users are techies, and easily get overwhelmed if the page is longer than 2 screen fulls.
