Abstract

What does it mean that Wikidata belong in education? We have now a consistent body of literature on how and why Wikipedia can inform assignments and other educational activities; this has contributed to informing the view that Wikipedia belongs in education. Wikidata is a relatively new Wikimedia project, and yet has had a tremendous impact on how we create, curate and share knowledge. How can Wikidata be incorporated into the educational curriculum? This is still an open question as only a small set of pioneering activities have been undertaken. What do we learn from them? To what direction are these activities moving? The panelists will share experiences, insights and (hopefully) preliminary findings of an academic research about the topic. As to provide common ground for attendees, an initial part of this panel (~10-15 minutes) will be dedicated to showing to attendees what Wikidata is about (unless a prior session on the conference is expected to cover this).

How does your proposal adds knowledge to the international community in Wikimedia and education?
  1. Introduction to Wikidata in an education setting
  2. Curation of examples of using Wikidata in an academic setting from around the world
  3. Assessment of challenges and opportunities of educational uses of Wikidata
About the panelists
  • João Alexandre Peschanski - is a university professor in São Paulo, Brazil. He has been experimenting with adding Wikidata into the academic curriculum for the past 3 years.
  • Shani Evenstein Sigalov - is an educator, lecturer and researcher at the Tel Aviv University, Israel. Her PhD at the School of Education focuses on Wikidata as a learning platform and in October 2017 she opened the 1st academic course in the world featuring Wikidata.
