- Abstract
Topics covered on this presentation are twofold. Firstly, it provides an overview of findings from a recent research on the association between a country's numeracy (or mathematical culture), the size of the Wikipedia community in a given language and the quality of content on Mathematics in Wikipedia per project language. This research has investigated languages/countries assessed by the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment and early findings were presented in April, 2018 [1]. The main finding is that a thriving Wikipedia community --at least in the sample of countries that is taken into consideration by the OECD-- is a stronger predictor of quality on content on Mathematics on Wikipedia than the level of scientific culture. Secondly, and given the context provided by the research paper, the presentation will describe the strategy to expand content on Mathematics on Wikipedia in Portuguese that the Brazilian community, in a partnership with the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center for Neuromathematics (RIDC NeuroMat), has undertaken. Brazil figures as one of the worst countries in terms of numeracy in the OECD assessment. The strategy, that has been framed as a developmental use of Wikimedia projects, has included education programs, a GLAM-Wiki initiative with the Museum of Mathematics, Wikipedians in Residence and more. A post from the WMF can be used for reference: [2].
