Wikiclubs

As of August 31, there are 195 registered members in all 8 active Wikiclubs (Goris, Ddmashen, Lernapat, Kirants, Koghb, Hatsik, Jermuk, and Kajaran). Wikiclub members continued the wikification of materials from the “Agricultural Encyclopedia” (“Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House, 2015) which was released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. Wikiclub members either created the missing items of the corresponding pages in Wikidata or linked the created articles with already existing items. Within the frames of this project 9 articles with a volume of 38,026 bytes were created in August. Since the launch of the project 601 articles, 1,528,018 bytes have been contributed to Armenian Wikipedia. The project will continue in September, as well.
In August, the "Olympiad 2024" project dedicated to the Summer Olympic Games in Paris was organized specifically for Wikiclub members. In the course of this competition project, the Wikiclub members translated articles from other language Wikipedias into Armenian about the prize-winning athletes of those games, as well as articles about the opening ceremony and mascot of the games. Thanks to this project, Armenian Wikipedia was enriched with articles about the Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Within the framework of the project, 35 Wikiclub members created 217 articles with a volume of 2,602,635 bytes. The project was in the format of a competition. The winner received a gift and a certificate provided by Wikimedia Armenia, and 4 other participants received certificates.
Wikiedits
[edit]Throughout August, out of 195 Wikiclub members 55 contributed to Wikipedia. In total, they have created 343 articles and made 1261 edits with a volume of 4,372,386 bytes. During the month of August, 50 Wikiclub members contributed to Wikidata, by making 571 edits in total.
Other events
[edit]Besides editing, the following events were organized in Wikiclubs:
- In August, a movie screening was organized at the Koghb Wikiclub. The members watched the movie "Ride on" with Jackie Chan in the lead role, after which they created the corresponding article on the Armenian Wikipedia.
- The members of Goris Wikiclub paid a visit to the Youth Center of Tegh village and presented Wikimedia projects; after the visit new members joined the Wikiclub.
Youth Summer Wikicamp 2024
[edit]On August 11-18, the Youth Summer Wikicamp 2024 was held in Tsaghkadzor, in which 46 young individuals aged 18-35 took part. 22 of them were experienced editors, whose selection was made after the Youth Winter Wikicamp 2024 based on the combination of their activity on Armenian Wikipedia and the quality of the articles they created. The other 24 participants were newcomers who were selected after the training sessions which were held at Wikimedia Armenia’ office, as well as Wikiclubs; those who actively participated and created quality articles were selected as participants of the Summer Youth Wikicamp.
The participants of the Wikicamp were divided into 4 groups of 11-12 people, which competed with each other not only in editing Wikipedia, but also in sports, intellectual games and cultural events.
During the 7 days of the camp, the participants translated 461 articles from different languages. In total, they contributed 15,594,760 bytes to Armenian Wikipedia. The articles were written from lists of the vital articles on Wikipedia. As a result of the edits, the best wiki editor, the best new wiki editor and the best team were determined, who received the awards and certificates set by Wikimedia Armenia.
During the camp, the youth competed in the following sports: volleyball, badminton, table tennis, archery, dodgeball. The “Brain-Ring” intellectual game and the constructor kit collection competition were also held. During the "Tasty Competition", the teams presented their cooking skills by preparing a dish with the pre-provided foods, and the dishes were evaluated by the judges. On the second to last day, the multi-stage "Fort Wiki" game was held in Tsakhkadzor, during which the groups demonstrated their abilities in various sports and games. As a result of all the competitions, the members of the team recognized as the best were also awarded with prizes set by Wikimedia Armenia. During the Wikicamp, an excursion was organized to several natural and historical monuments of Armenia - Jukhtak Monastery, Haghartsin, Hidden Waterfall - during which the participants took photos of these historical-architectural and natural monuments in order to later upload those images to the Wikimedia Commons during the "Wiki Loves Monuments" and "Wiki Loves the Earth" photo contests. There was also a visit to the swimming pool.
Wikicampers also welcomed some guests. The representatives of the "Grkaser" website visited the Wikicamp. The attendees participated in the discussion of the audio book, after which the campers who created articles on literature from the pre-provided lists, were awarded special prizes from the “Grkaser” website and Darak publishing house. The deputy head of the Youth Department of theMi nistry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Armine Petrosyan, visited the Wikicamp. The youth programs and future opportunities of the camp participants were discussed. The guest answered the questions from the audience, then she attended the "Fort Wiki" game.
On the last day of the Wikicamp, a theater performance was held, during which the groups performed their plays using the plots of well-known movies.
After the official closing ceremony, the camp participants gathered around the campfire, where they spent several hours singing and networking.
Wikimania 2024
[edit]This year, from August 7 to 10, the Wikimedia movement’s annual Wikimania conference took place in Katowice, Poland, where many representatives of different wiki communities from around the world shared their editing and volunteering experiences, as well as their activities within the movement.
Two employees from Wikimedia Armenia - Mher Bekaryan and Mari Avetisyan - received WMF scholarship and participated in Wikimania 2024.
Meetings were held with representatives of wiki communities from different countries, user groups, during which the specifics of implementing projects in different communities, new approaches and possible cooperation opportunities were discuss
Wiki Loves Earth - selection process
[edit]The selection process of the photos uploaded from Armenia during Wiki Loves Earth 2024 photo contest took place in August. As a result of the several stages of the selection process by the jury, photographs of the natural world and animals of Armenia were distinguished, 15 of which were submitted to the evaluation of the international competition. Ten out of 15 photos will be selected as the winners of the local Armenian contest and the results will be announced during the awards ceremony on September 17.
