Wikimedia CEE Hub/Microgrants/report/Ionian WikiSprint – part of the Ionian Wikithon 2024
Ionian WikiSprint as a part of the Ionian Wikithon 2024 successfully reached out its main aim to strengthen and extend the wikimedia community's ties with the students of the Ionian University and the Department of Informatics in particular. We welcomed new developers and students to attend our presentations and assisted them to contribute and become members of wiki community as well as to take part in a workshop-challenge. The Ionian WikiSprint - Ionian Wikithon 2024 was also one of the events that took place for the 20th anniversary of the Dept. of Informatics, Ionian University and attracted a great deal of publicity in local media, like newspapers and tv channels and it trended on social media.
We have designed two different kind of activities; the first is a number of community meet-ups and the second one is a workshop-challenge. Following we present the final calendar of the carried out activities.

The outcome of the Ionian WikiSprint - Challenge is better depicted in the following two images, from the WikiShootMe tool. The first image is a preview before the 15th of May 2024 and the second one is after the 15th of May 2024. One can see that many missing photos were added and wikidata items were edited or created.

One of our challenges is to welcome and engage more students and volunteers to join the Wikimedia community and become active and regular users. Based on our final metrics we have achieved our goal. Specifically we have created a tight wikimedia group in the Ionian University, mainly composed of students of the Dept. of Informatics. This year we welcomed a significant number of new participants, even from the first year students, and most of them participated as editors, too. A very important lesson is that the exploitation of the Dashboard is very useful, we could even say necessary, in order to fully record the majority of activities carried out. Additionally, the majority of the participants found very helpful the existence of the Ionian Wikithon 2024 User Help Page in Phabricator, where one can find the main steps that must be carried out and various guidelines for the activities. Finally, a specific gamified challenge, like the WikiShootMe in Corfu that we organised, was really engaging especially for the new participants. Participants traversed the city of Corfu and had a clear and easy target to try to upload photos and edit wikidata items, so that the map from the WikiShootMe become "more green". The fact that they could participate even by just using their mobile phones was very easy for the newcomers. The only issue that we encountered was that newcomers had to make 10 edits before they could contribute via WikiShootMe. |
