Summary[edit]

Wikimedia hackathons are generally collaborative computer programming events which specifically focus on technologies and projects powering Wikipedia and thousands of MediaWiki installations. In 2017 Wikimedia Österreich will host the international MediaWiki Hackathon in Vienna (May 19-21, 2017) and aims at using the event for tech community outreach.

The idea is to foster (tech-)community building not only in Austria, but also in some other countries and with interested affiliates. Ideally, this would involve a local pre-event (approx. two months before the main hackathon), where interested attendees would be introduced to MediaWiki, Phabricator etc. so that they are not completely new when they attend the main Hackathon.

In the workshop we would like to develop ideas and strategies with interested affiliates on how to foster and expand their local tech communities. The focus is on newcomers (e.g. tech-savvy volunteers from like-minded communities).
