Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2023 Report
I attended the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2023 as a representative from the Wikimedia Community User Group Turkey. The conference took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, from September 15th to 17th, 2023. It was a gathering for people who care about Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia, in Central and Eastern Europe.
Highlights from the Start
The conference kicked off with important speakers:
- Jimmy Wales
- Maryana Iskander
- Eliso Bolkvadze
- Tinatin Berdzenishvili
- Barbara Klen
- Mehman Ibragimov
These speakers talked about why Wikimedia projects are important and how they bring people together to share knowledge.
My Presentation: Adiutor - Making Wikipedia Maintenance Easier
On the second day of the conference, I presented about Adiutor. Adiutor is a tool to help people do important tasks on Wikipedia more easily. Here's what I shared:
What I Learned
Apart from my presentation, I learned many things at the conference. People discussed Wikipedia, other wikis, free software, and how to share knowledge for free. They also talked about the social and technical parts of these topics.
The Session I Attended
I participated in a session titled "Design the Interface Together: Vector 2022, Dark Mode, and Other Changes," led by Szymon Grabarczuk. We discussed making Wikipedia look better and work better, like adding a dark mode. We used our laptops to try out some ideas. I also attended the session "Russia: editing Wikimedia projects in the time of cholera," led by Victoria Doronina. It was a valuable session where we learned about editing Wikimedia projects in challenging times.
About the Organizators
I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the organizers (Wikimedia UG Georgia.) and their team. They did a fantastic job hosting and organizing the conference.
The Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2023 was a fantastic experience. I met interesting people and learned new things. My presentation about Adiutor and the things I learned will help make Wikipedia better for Wikipedians in CEE. I look forward to more meetings like this in the future.
