Abstract:
My island (Cyprus) is a melting pot of cultures, beliefs, and traditions that have been brought here by people from all over the world. It has also been a divided island for the last 50 years. I have experienced firsthand the complexities and challenges that arise from such a restrictive and divided society. When I moved to America for a few years, my stay there as an immigrant – being the "OTHER" – and my nostalgia for the island acted as a catalyst. On my return I crossed the check point for the first time and purposefully engaged myself in meeting the "others". As a result, in 2018 I initiated the creation of the Wikimedia Community User Group Cyprus. I will share my lived experiences on the island and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. I will also discuss the impact of exclusion, bias, and discrimination on individuals and the community as a whole. Moreover, I will highlight the actions we can take to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. I will encourage everyone to challenge their biases, actively seek out diverse perspectives, and create a safe and welcoming environment for all. |
