The problem and the context

Hate and violence sweep across society with an unprecedented (destructive) rage and perfidy, leaving real scars in their wake. #NetzCourage knows the whole colorful bouquet of cyberbullying, hate speech, threats and slander from personal experience and has therefore been campaigning for years for justice as well as for the respect and preservation of rights and human dignity on the net. The Hackdays #H@ckTheAngryNetDays are another milestone on this path.

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

Until now, most individuals and organizations fighting against hate speech have tended their own little gardens. But the current and future challenges are very similar for all of them, if not the same. More awareness and enagement as well as cooperation and collaboration are needed. Plus, many relevant digital resources are not publicly available to understand the challenges and work on solutions.

What is your solution to this problem (please explain the context and the solution)?

The #H@ckTheAngryNetDays are an interdisciplinary event to promote innovation and collaboration. Different actors from various fields, especially activists, coders and designers, but also affected people, entrepreneurs, students and other interested people, develop solutions to various challenges and project ideas within one month in mixed teams. The organization team will make sure that relevant digital resources (mainly data) will be made available during the event and all teams will be using open resources (open data and open-code). Innovative ideas are given the space and care to foster. Plus, the Hackdays are the fundament of a new community to arise.

The #H@ckTheAngryNetDays will take place over four four-hour workshops in November 2021. The time allocation allows teams to work on their project, consult with people, or organize needed resources between each workshop. At the four workshops, participants will go through a Design Thinking process:

1. Understanding challenges & building teams (with presentations from experts). 2. Exchange with the target group, develop solutions and start prototyping 3. Further development of the results and feedback from the target group 4. Presentation of the results (public event)

Following the Hackdays, all results and findings will be published in a report. Another event will be organized to bring the community back together and motivate the teams to continue working on their projects. In addition, the most promising projects will be followed up or supported by interested individuals and organizations, if possible.

Project goals

Education and analysis, prevention and combat, but also the development of best practices in dealing with cyberhate and violence are the overall goal of the #H@ckTheAngryNetDays. At the same time we aim to enable innovative open-source and open data solutions, cross-sector collaborations, a strong network of committed people and many novel insights.

Project impact

How will you know if you have met your goals?

We will track the number of participants, experts and organizations involved. The number of challenges and final projects will be documented. We will conduct a survey with all participants to get to know what they have learned, how many new connections they have made and if they continue working on their project. Last but not least, we will publish an open databank with relevant digital resources regarding hate speech.

Do you have any goals or metrics around participation or content?

We aim to have 50-100 participants, a minimum of 10 challenges and project teams, at least 4 experts involved in the process and at least 5 partner organizations to organize and communicate the event.

Community engagement

We will invite and include a diverse community from academia, entrepreneurship, activism, corporations, NGOs etc. Our goal is to have highly diverse participants working on the same mission: fighting hate speech online. Participants and contributors will receive regular updates before the event, will get support during 1 month in November to implement their project idea and will become part of an alumni community after the Hackdays. The alumni community will meet on a regular basis, exchange and support each other.
