Planned activity: Giving a Wikimaps workshop at the 2nd Swiss Cultural Heritage in Basel 1–2 July

Wikimaps is an emerging collection of tools for historical mapping in the context of the Wikimedia projects. Wikimaps Warper lets you rectify scanned maps to present day coordinates. OpenHistoricalMap is OpenStreetMap for historical data. This workshop presents a workflow for creating a historical street view with these tools and more.

(e.g. How many people can benefit from the micro grant you request): Me as a visitor and presenter at the hackathon and all the participants in the hackathon who can familiarize with the tools.

Please explain what influence your activity will have on Wikimedia Projects
(e.g. quantitative: number of new pictures uploaded to commons, no of new articles created / qualitative: strengthen the community of german-speaking wikipedia authors etc,): The benefit of presenting and participating with the Wikimaps project exposes it to a wider developer / cultural heritage audience, who may play an active role in the future adoption or development of the project. This will increase the number of active Wikimaps Warper users/developers by at least 5 active users. It will offer GLAM representatives ideas about how their contributions can come alive and that will facilitate future donations. When adding historical maps becomes possible technically (when it is adopted in production) all the articles in Wikipedias may benefit from perfectly framed historical map images with additional info drawn from the Wikiverse.
