Introduction[edit]

Last 15 until 19 August, I had the opportunity to attend Wikimania 2023 located in Singapore, which was held at the Suntec Convention and Exhibition Center. This opportunity and experience was made possible by the scholarship given by the Community Users Group of Malaysia. Through this event, I am able to gain new knowledge and various skills which are particularly useful in enhancing my project in Wikimedia. All these meaningful experiences were as below.

Things earned from Wikimania 2023[edit]

As a newcomer to Wikimedia, I learned a lot of new things through this conference. The most important thing is that I now know about how this movement works. Before attending Wikimania, I have only known one of the many projects that wikimedia provides but since then, I get to know more projects and more importantly I know how to edit and add new articles in Wikimedia projects. My goal throughout attending this conference is to attend basic editing and article writing workshops to help me enhance my contribution to the wikimedia project. My target was successfully achieved since wikimania 2023 has provided many basic workshop slots such as Wikipedia Simple Basic Workshop, Common Basic Workshop and so on.

August 16[edit]
  • Wikipedia Basic Workshop

On August 16, I have attended the Wikipedia Basic Workshop where we were guided to edit in Simple Wikipedia. This workshop is so precious as I am able to learn about new Wikipedia project. In the same time we learn about tools that might help us in editing and writing articles.

  • Visible Wikiwomen Photobooth - Creating a feminist space to document our gender, race and body plurality.

I have participated by taking photographs and filling in the provided forms at their booth.

  • Wikimedia Commons Basic Workshop.

Through this workshop, I was able to learn how to upload images in the wikipedia project, especially in wikimedia Commons and learn how to preserve copyright upon the pictures I upload.

  • Wikimania Grand Opening

At this day, I also joined the Opening of Wikimania 2023 held in the Plenary Hall and we also celebrated the Wikimedian of the Year as they share their experience along their journey in contributing to Wikimedia. Throughout the opening, I also able to socialize with friends from other country and also from different continent which is a whole new thing to me.

  • Wiki Loves living heritage Bazaar

Session of which motivating the participants to preserve and develop their culture by showing many ideas and activities on how to do so.

  • How to edit AmiWiki

Amiwiki is a project conducted by a small Wikimedia User Group from Paiwan. In this session we learn about how they develop their movement in order to preserve their native language. This session is very close to my heart since we aimed for the same target which is to preserve Kadazandusun language, origin from Sabah, Malaysia.

  • Wikimania 2023 ESEAP Group Photo

I got to take photo with ESEAP Wikimedian. It's a sustainable community.

August 18[edit]

  • Inauguration Of Kent Wiki Club.

A special thanks to CUG Malaysia for making this happen and also for the Wikimania 2023 organizer group for helping out throughout the ceremony. Representing the IPG Kent Tuaran Community, we are really greatful for being able to inaugurate our club witnessed by our global friends.

  • Wikitongues

Wikitongues is a platform where the users are able to document their languages. I found the platform was useful and easy to use through the presentation.

  • Psst, Wikimedia has a sound logo.

In this session, we have been introduced to the sound of the wikimedia sound logo which is the sound of a book page being flip.

August 19[edit]

  • Resources for Incubator

As a contributor in the Wikipedia Incubator, I don't want to miss out the knowledge given in this session.

  • Sazau by Wikeint And Manuk Lembukun Dance (Dance from Borneo)

I am one of the performers in this dance. From this performance we are able to show the world what the Borneo has to offer from only its dance which is Diversity in Unity.

  • Rebranding Wikimedia to capture the new generation: Wikimedia for Cosplay and ACG World

In this session led by the Founder of CUG Malaysia. We are able to discuss about the idea on how to capture more users from the younger generation.

  • Wikimania 2023 Dinner and Dance

I had the opportunity to connect and interact with more friends.

Future Plans[edit]

  1. I will be more committed in contributing to Wikimedia more over in WikiKamus, Incubator and Wiki Commons especially in order to preserve and digitalize Kadazandusun Language.
  2. Introducing Wikimedia to a wider community.
  3. Participating actively in any wikipedia project.

So far, I have introduced Wikimedia to some teachers, Friends, and family members and we are looking forward for a future collaboration.

Feedback[edit]

Wikimania is a great place to exchange ideas with other users. I also find Wikimania as a suitable place to develop socially, mentally and academically. Wikimania must be a lifelong project.
