How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I attended Wikimania both virtually and an in person event organised by Wikimedia Community Usergroup Uganda held at Capital Kitchen, Kampala.

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?

I spent my scholarship funds to purchase internet data, and airtime for coordination during the event. I also shared my scholarship funds with a friend by purchasing for her internet data worth Uganda shillings 50,000 to enable her watch the recorded sessions after Wikimania.

Three specific sessions that I attended include:

  1. Writing Women into Wiki History: Experiences and Best Practices by Camelia Boban, Effie Kapsalis, Andrew Lih, Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight.
  2. Growing WikiForHumanRights: Learning from a Global Topics for Impact Campaign, by Alex Stinson, and Ruby Damenshie-Brown.
  3. Announcement of Wikimedians of the year by Jimmy Wales and Mehrdad Pourzakikhani.

Takeaways

  • Being a community organiser of editathons and events, i learnt the importance and the impact of story telling while organising an editathon and this will improve the way I organise events with emphasis of ensuring the community's voices are highlighted during events.
  • I learnt how to draw attention of the audience as you present during events by making use of the tools and understanding how best your audience learn.
How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?

I connected with people during the in person event being a festival edition of Wikimania, I had fun and had the opportunity to meet new comers during the in person event and identify potential new comers who can join the community to promote Wikimedia vision 2030 and free and open knowledge in Uganda.
