Wikimania 2022 From Thursday, August 11 to Sunday, August 14, 2022

How I attended Wikimania 2022[edit]

I attended Wikimania both physically and online. I joined the Wikimedia User group Uganda for the in-person event on Friday 12th August 2022, where I met new and old Wikimedia editors and learned a thing or two from them. During my online engagement, I used Pheedloop, Youtube, Jitsimeet, and Zoom. Although the primary app of the event was Pheedloop, it had a lot of issues with connection and consistency. I, therefore, used mostly youtube for the majority of the sessions, Jistimeet for the Hackathon, and zoom for the Pheedloop linked sessions.

What I spent my scholarship funds on[edit]

The scholarship enabled me to purchase data bundles, buy a set of small electronics, cater for part of my transportation to and fro the in-person event as well as cater for related costs during Wikimania 2022.

Takeaways from specific sessions[edit]

  • Digital Security Basics things like cookies made more sense during this session, using VPNs, and the access we give to sites and apps to our information is also very critical. this session gave an insight into how much access the third-party sites have to our information.
  • Showcasing Youth Diversity and Inclusion through Storytelling in the Wikimedia Movement: this session touched on a key aspect of society and that is the youth who have to be brought on board and made to love the Wikimedia tools and how they can contribute to them and be useful members. this session also enlightened me on aspects of WIkivibrance a key aspect of Wikimedia mentorship.
  • The challenges and opportunities of building a community: this session showed the ups and downs and also the barriers of setting a community in an area and also led to the need for more decentralization in the Wikimedia movement to reach more people. as a person who believes in this, it helped me a lot as I believe, the movement should look to set up user groups or clubs in universities.

Outcomes and lessons learnt[edit]

  • digital security basics
  • The Ukrainian culture
  • other cultures like the Heymann, Montano, etc.
  • more insight into Wikimedia tools like Wikilovesmonuments, 1lib1ref, etc.
  • a bit of use of software as a Wikimedia tool.
  • The effect of wars and conflicts on access and spread of information.

Connecting during Wikimania 2022[edit]

Most of the new connections I made were during the in-person event with the Wikimedia Usergroup Uganda at the capital kitchen but also I got new followers on Twitter who have the same enthusiasm as I do for Wikimedia
