The Human Rights Team of the Wikimedia Foundation supports volunteers who face persecution for contributing in good faith to Wikimedia projects. The team also works on protecting and respecting human rights across Wikimedia projects. The Team is part of the Legal Department.
The Wikimedia Movement's goal is to make sure everyone, everywhere can share and access free knowledge safely and freely. To achieve this, over 300,000 volunteers add, edit, and update content on Wikimedia projects and create reliable, well-sourced, and uncensored information.
However, some people (like governments or other powerful groups) try to control information, influence stories, or silence voices. This can put Wikimedia contributors and users at risk. Wikimedians may face threats like intimidation, harassment, surveillance, or persecution. This can harm their safety and violate their rights, like the right to free speech. (You can read more about human rights and the risks Wikimedians face here).

Who we are and what we do
We are a group of passionate and experienced human rights defenders with knowledge of different regions. Our work focuses on people. We support those who are harmed for participating in Wikimedia projects, help reduce risks, and build networks of trusted partners who help keep Wikimedians safe. Through this, we support the implementation of WMF's Human Rights Policy. We work in three main areas:
Do you wear a name tag in public? Do you use the same key for your car and office? – The answer will likely be no. However, while many of us take steps to stay safe in real life, staying safe online is different and comes with its own challenges:
The Human Rights Team offers resources, training, and support to help you stay safe when using Wikimedia projects or the internet in general. After all, privacy and online safety are very important for freedom of expression and allowing knowledge and ideas to grow!
We offer learning materials to help you understand digital safety, potential risks, best practices, and how to stay safe from the start.
Staying safe online doesn’t have to be hard – it can actually be fun! For a start, you can take a look at these resources:

Human rights work is a joint effort. To protect our volunteers, the Human Rights Team works with different organizations around the world. This global network helps us adapt to local contexts, improve capacity, and keep community members safe.
Like the work that we do and the community we support, our partnerships are diverse: they include legal support, digital training, threat monitoring, translation and more. Are you part of an organization that cares about open knowledge, freedom of speech, and other human rights? Do you see areas on the Wikimedia platform where more human rights content is needed? Do you have experience supporting people who are at risk? Contact us at talktohumanrights@wikimedia.org to explore a partnership – we look forward to hearing from you!
Human Rights Community Awareness
Are you interested in the connection between human rights and Wikimedia? Would you like to share human rights concerns on Wikimedians in your region? Any questions on safely contributing to Wikimedia projects you’d like to have answered? Please reach out to us and let's start a conversation, or join our Community Conversation Hours!
The Human Rights Team aims to listen to, learn from, and act to support Wikimedians whose right to express themselves freely and safely is under threat. In informal exchange with community members, we
- Map current human rights risks specific to region and circumstance, and try to mitigate risks and find avenues of support
- Discuss how community members can contribute to Wikimedia projects while being mindful of their own and others’ safety and rights
- Explore the connection between technology, human rights and the Wikimedia Movement
- Discuss other topics that are helpful to your safety, human rights and wellbeing as a Wikimedian
Let’s be in touch!
- Send us an email with your thoughts, comments or concerns at talktohumanrights@wikimedia.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
- Reach out individually, or with your chapter, user group, affiliate, or project
- Join a Community Conversation Hour (see below)
- Whether you are facing human rights risks firsthand, seeking to understand potential threats, or would like to know more, let’s learn from each other!
The Human Rights and Digital Safety community conversation hours are a space to engage with the Human Rights Team and other Wikimedians interested in Wikimedia's human rights work. Community conversation hours are a safe place to discuss human rights concerns in your community or to have broader conversations about what human rights mean in the context of Wikimedia. We plan to hold these conversations once per quarter.
During these sessions, we’ll answer questions about the Human Rights Team’s work, and discuss digital safety challenges and solutions. We can also help plan workshops tailored to your community. We’d love to meet you, hear your ideas, and support you however we can.
