Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees/Call for feedback: Community Board seats/Reports/2021-02-07 Wikimedia Tanzania User Group

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

2021-02-07 Wikimedia Tanzania User Group Twelve people joined the call on google meet. Out of these twelve, about 8 people engaged in the conversation. We talked about the board and the various ideas proposed by the board and the new one about regional seats.

The following ideas were suggested to be implemented together with regional quotas.

  • Implementation of regional boards. This idea proposes that each region should have a board. And these regional boards will have the mandate to vet a candidate from a particular region to serve on the final Wikimedia Board.
  • Implementation of the Board Delegated-Selection Committee together with regional seats
  • More than half were in support of the implementation of the idea “Call for types of skills and experiences”. They were of the view that this will ensure that anyone serving on the board is not just there to occupy a seat.
However, some were concerned that due to the fact that most communities in Africa are emerging communities, there is always going to be a challenge comparing the skills and experiences of candidates from bigger communities with candidates from smaller communities. They were of the view that there is a higher probability that candidates from smaller communities may not have as much experience and skills as candidates from bigger communities.

A question was raised about who will put together the trustee Evaluation form.
