erm... brings back memories of 90s-era wikis and Abbie Hoffman?

Pro:
Con:

  1. Aphaia Too long to memorize for foreigners. If translated, it sounds silly (in Japanese we don't use the verb as a magazine/newsletter title), Lacks serious, respectable sound of the other suggestions. Andre (talk) 20:08, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC), Anthere

Neutral:

  1. +sj+ A bit silly. Not that short. On the other hand, hard to forget and easy to translate.

Wikimedia Quarto

[edit]

The current name. Latin; hints of publishing (a quarto is an 8-pg folio) and quarterly nature.

Pro:

  1. +sj+ Simple, convenient. But hopefully you can suggest a better one ^_^
  2. [[User:Mxn|Minh Nguy?n (talk, blog)]] – Fun to say. 04:07, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  11. Probably the best. -- Mattworld 17:34, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  12. I would strongly favourize this name: It links past (book history) with the future and just sounds good. --Lullus 17:31, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
  13. Great tie in between publishing and the quarterly aspect of this newsleter. Glitch010101 19:38, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  15. Samaritan 00:01, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)
  16. Sounds professional. Not sure if this is a problem but Quarto also happens to be a board game. BrokenSegue 23:14, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
  17. Creating the international covers, I've starred at the name for hours. Despite an initial dislike of the name, I've gradually come to love it. -- user:zanimum

Manifold

[edit]

Every meaning seems relevant (although the one about the extra stomach of a ruminant may be stretching the metaphor).

Extra note, Manifold can mean:

  • a pipe that has several lateral outlets to or from other pipes
  • manifold paper: a lightweight paper used with carbon paper to make multiple copies; "an original and two manifolds"
  • a set of points such as those of a closed surface or and analogue in three or more dimensions
  • many and varied; having many features or forms; "manifold reasons"; "our manifold failings"; "manifold intelligence"; "the multiplex opportunities in high technology"

I guess more definitions could be procured by a google define search [1] or a dictionary.com search [2] or even Wikipedia's manifold page (But it's not too helpful). Ambush Commander 23:28, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Pro:

  1. Zigger 00:00, 2004 Dec 4 (UTC) Languages other than en could choose one meaning to translate, or choose a different name. Finding a language-neutral name could take a long time.
  2. +sj+ ancient, concise, mellifluous.
  3. Or "Wikimedia Manifold." Suggests something universal and science-fictiony. Andre (talk) 20:03, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  4. I prefer Wikimedia Manifold. --Aphaia 20:24, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Con:

  1. Anthere 01:12, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)(what does that mean ?)
  2. I agree. The word is kind of obscure, and is too generic by itself. Ambush Commander 23:31, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Shamone

Issue

[edit]

Pro:
Con:

  1. Anthere, Andre (talk) Too many meanings, most of which don't apply. 20:09, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  2. Furthermore, too generic, we'd have to add a Wikimedia somewhere in there too. Ambush Commander 23:50, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Neutral:

The Wikimaniac

[edit]

Pro:
Con:

  1. Anthere 01:12, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)(extremely con) (french joke), Aphaia 02:50, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC) It sounds like a sort of insanity.
  2. Ambush Commander 23:35, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC) Agreed. Too informal for something like this.

Neutral:

Conscientia

[edit]

Latin, means consciousness or knowledge. Doesn't need to be translated.
