Wikimedia Deutschland wants to make a step towards creating a collaboration with a movement partner for a common software development infrastructure for Wikidata. With this we want to breathe life into the movement recommendations of increasing the sustainability of our movement, invest in skill and leadership development and empower local communities.
Only 500 of an estimated 7000 languages are currently represented online and the majority of the population that is now online and consuming content, is not able to do this in their languages. This is reinforcing the already existing inequalities that communities with under-resourced and/or underrepresented languages are facing - both online and offline (see Report on Decolonizing the Internet's Languages).
So the first focal area of this software development partnership is imagined to be the lexicographical part of Wikidata - and by this we want to make sure that language technology is put in the hands of communities whose underrepresented or under-resourced languages could benefit from such technology the most.
We are at the beginning of this project and want to reach out to communities and movement partners to spread the word about the possibility of participating in this partnership as well as gather input for this new kind of collaboration for the Wikimedia movement.
