Wikimedia Workshop For Expat Women Community

In April 2023, an online workshop on Wikimedia was successfully organized in collaboration with the "Pravasi Sree" expatriate communities in the UAE. The primary aim of this workshop was to provide women with an introduction to the fundamentals of Wikimedia and its various projects. The workshop was conducted in partnership with Wikimedians of Kerala user group and Wikimedians of UAE, and was attended by members of the Kerala expatriate community residing in the UAE. The participants were able to gain valuable insights into the world of Wikimedia, thanks to the collaborative efforts of everyone involved.

The workshop was conducted online using the Zoom application and lasted for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Trainer and Organizer

The workshop was conducted by Akbarali, an experienced Wikimedia trainer. The workshop was organized by Adilavk, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting digital literacy and community engagement.Total 15 women participated in the session.

Topics Covered

• Editing Wikipedia:

Participants were introduced to the process of editing Wikipedia pages. They learned how to create new pages, add content, and make edits to existing pages.

• Creating Account:

The participants were guided through the process of creating a Wikimedia account. They learned about the benefits of having an account, such as being able to track their contributions and collaborate with other editors.

• Introduction to Wikimedia Commons:

The participants were introduced to Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free media files. They learned how to upload media files, such as images and videos, to Wikimedia Commons.

• Licensing Policy of Wikimedia Commons:

The participants were given an overview of the licensing policy of Wikimedia Commons. They learned about the different types of licenses and how to choose the appropriate license for their media files.

• Introduction to Wikidata:

The participants were introduced to Wikidata, a free and open knowledge base. They learned how to contribute to Wikidata by adding new data and making edits to existing data.

• Introduction to Wikisource:

The participants were introduced to Wikisource, a digital library of free content. They learned how to contribute to Wikisource by adding new texts and proofreading existing texts.

Conclusion

The workshop on Wikimedia was a great success, and the participants gained a basic understanding of the various Wikimedia projects. The workshop provided a platform for women to learn new skills and contribute to the Wikimedia community.
