Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos/Resources
Using Petscan WMF Labs Tool
Petscan (http://petscan.wmflabs.org) may be used to find articles that don't have photos in your preferred language. Subsequently, Massviews Analysis (https://pageviews.toolforge.org/massviews/) may be used to sort the Petscan articles by views per day. Steps are indicated below:
- Go to http://petscan.wmflabs.org
- From Categories tab, you may select your preferred language code (
ar
,en
,sk
, for example) - Filter by categories that interest you by specifying each in the Categories text field (one per line without "category:" prefix). For example, the category "Monuments and Memorials in Lagos" on
en:wiki
. - Specify the search depth for subcategories to include (0 means to not use subcategories)
- Click on the "Page Property" tab, then select the No option for Lead Image.
- Click the Wikidata tab
- Choose which Sitelinks to filter by (has all enwiki, dewiki, zhwiki, fawiki, frwiki, but none gawiki, for example)
- Click on the Output tab
- Choose PagePile as the format
- Click on Do It to execute the search.
- Copy the Pile number at the top of the search (at top-left, the results page will show "Pile 12345", where 12345 is the pile number)
- Go to https://pageviews.toolforge.org/massviews/
- Choose Page Pile as the Source from the drop-down menu next to the search field
- Paste the pile number in the Source search field
Once this is done, the list of articles in that category with no photos will be generated. Then go to Wikimedia Commons to search for corresponding images with the article title.

Combining categories with other sources of data to find articles that need images
You can combine other characteristics about articles into search results to get more interesting and limited.
Searching for articles with .jpg, .tiff, or .gif in the text
You can search through your Wikipedia for articles
- This is the search that removes this media files from the results for English Wikipedia
You can modify this search for specific categories using the search interface
- This search retrieves articles in the category about Irish women writers
- This search retrieves articles in the category tree about Ugandan Activists
Machine learning topics
For example, you can combine the category "Category:No local image but image on Wikidata" with topics defined by the ORES Machine learning model of topics. For example:
- Articles about topics related to Women in the Category with Images on Wikidata
- Articles about topics related to Biographies in the Category with Images on Wikidata
- Articles about topics related to Biographies and Africa with images on Wikidata
The topics for the machine learning model can be found here. Note that these articletopic models are only available on a limited number of wikis.
Combining search with Petscan
Or if you are interested in other kinds of intersections, you can produce similar data from combining categories, Wikidata or search results on Petscanː http://petscan.wmflabs.org/
Suggestion of image insertion of an article based on its presence on the equivalent article of another language wikipedia
Aka, redlist for images, using Glamify tool.
Many "red" lists have been created for Wiki Loves Africa. Access Here
Tools
FIST
The FIST tool (Deadlink, July 2022) allows you to search for Free Images based on the topic. Note that queries that include a large number of images can be very slow.
WDWP a new tool developed for the WPWP has an index of articles with missing images in certain languages (This tool is very useful)
WDFIST
The WDFIST tool allows to assign images to Wikidata items. Any Wikidata item that is used in an Infobox can possibly automatically show the image, depending on the language infobox logic.
File Candidates
FileCandidates has pre-compiled lists of potential images on Commons (as well as free images on Flickr that can be transferred to Commons) for Wikidata items. A Commons image found for a Wikidata item can then be used on the corresponding Wikipedia article.
WikiShootMe
WikiShootMe shows Wikidata items, marked as with and without image, Wikipedia articles, Commons images, and others on a map. Ideal if you are physically in a location and want to see what objects around you need an image on Wikipedia and Wikidata. The Commons mobile app also shows nearby articles needing a picture.
Also:
- c:Category:Uses of Wikidata Infobox with no image a category of 719,634 categories on Commons that have a wikidata box but no image.
