Wikis World/2023-10

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Happy one year of Wikis World! 🎉 We did it! It's hard to believe that it's been a full year since we started this community. Here's what we wrote in our first monthly update:

It's been a month since Wikis World launched. Our original plan had been to host the 10-15 wiki folks that would be displaced in the mastodon.technology shutdown, only to get a surge of interest when the birdsite...imploded.

As of 2022-11-13, Wikis World currently has 34 users and 925 posts. Welcome everyone, especially those who are new to the Fediverse, we hope you like it and stick around!

As of 2023-10-20, Wikis World has 154 users and too many posts to count, but we're taking up 12.9GB in the PostgreSQL database. For the majority of our users, Wikis World has been their introduction to the Fediverse and they certainly have stuck around. Thanks to everyone who has made this server so successful, we hope to be celebrating with you all again in 12 months time :)

In regular news, we upgraded to Mastodon 4.2.0 last month, check out the blog post and full release notes for what's new. The biggest change is that you can now have your posts indexed, so they can be searched by the text they contain instead of just via hashtags; see the instructions for how to opt-in. We've since upgraded to 4.2.1 as well, with a number of bug fixes.

On a related note, there is currently a discussion regarding using the "glitch-soc" fork of Mastodon (and possibly switching hosting providers), which comes with features like longer posts and using Markdown syntax, among other things. If you have opinions, please participate in the discussion.

Finally, the past few weeks have been especially difficult for a number of people all around the globe. While not required, please use content warnings judiciously; we recommend reviewing the Fedi.Tips guidance on when and how to use them.
