Wikivoyage/Wikimania 2017

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Wikimania 2017 will take place in August in Montreal. This site should coordinate Wikivoyage related topics and meetings.

Meet up[edit]

Are more momebers of the Wikivoyage community around? Is anybody interested to meet up at the official venue or in the evening anywhere in town?

  • DerFussi - I will be in town during the whole Wikimania and interested to meet.
  • Amqui from the French Wikivoyage. I will be there the whole time, but, as the Vice President of the local Wikimedia chapter, I will be pretty busy with other stuff unrelated to Wikivoyage. I was disappointed at the last Wikimedia Conference to see that many still consider Wikivoyage as a "lesser" project... Hopefully we can change that.

Wikivoyage booth[edit]

I hope to get a Wikivoyage table or booth and try to be around as often as possible. -- DerFussi 05:58, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Presentations[edit]

I am going to submit one or two lightning talks and a poster. More ideas and wishes can be dropped here. -- DerFussi 05:58, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Technical issues[edit]

Wikimania is a good place to talk with other communities, Foundation members and software developers. We should write down all our wishes and ideas

Listing editor[edit]

WV urgently needs a better feature to add and edit listings. WV/de uses the template master and all other language versions use the listing editor. The listing editor is very easy to use and a good tool for editors and travellers who are not familiar with the wiki software. But both solutions have two disadvantages:

  • There ist no way to edit Wikidata directly
  • Both editors do not work in the Visual Editor and on mobile devices. But mobile editing is very important to Wikivoyage because travellers want to add information on tour not at home.

What do you think. How could a future solution look like?

  • Even if you use the add Visual Editor. Editors have to know about templates (no wiki users do not know). and even if they know they have to know how a necessary template is called. -- DerFussi 05:59, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ideas about new features to be discussed with the developers
  • a favourite template list, that can be configured in every loacal wiki - with alias names. The list should be available on desktop and mobile. At the end an "add museum" button (and a dozen more) should be available, and the button should not be part f the normal "Add tempate" section. It should be easy to find and always visible.
  • the information added by the editor should be saved in Wikidata, if an WD item is connected. --

Kartographer[edit]

  • Internationalization, transcription of non-Latin geo names

Editor retention[edit]

  • ...has always been something of a problem on Wikivoyage, but seems to be worse than ever these days. What impressions of Wikivoyage's culture have been received by editors of other WMF sites who have tried editing there? What kept them coming back, or alternatively, what kept them FROM coming back? More broadly, what are the essential elements required for a wiki community's members to be happy and to feel inspired to continue contributing? -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 01:47, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We have the same problem on WV/de. It's an important you have pointed out here. I am going to have a WV booth at the Wikimania and going to ask about the others impression. Maybe we can think about a survey. I am going to talk about it and what questions should be asked. -- DerFussi 10:12, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    WV/ro is basically a one user's project. But ... one is better than zero, right? ;) Wintereu 11:45, 28 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thats right. Any idea to get more. Unfortunately more language versions look like that. I check WV/vi and WV/sv from time to time. -- DerFussi 10:32, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
