YorubaWikimedia FanClub

The Yoruba Wikimedian Fan Club is a student-led community established within tertiary institutions in Nigeria, committed to promoting the mission, vision, and core values of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group. These fan clubs serve as campus-based affiliates of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, actively contributing to Wikimedia projects, especially in the Yoruba language, and participating in related outreach and educational activities.

The Yoruba Wikimedia Fan clubs are formally registered with their respective institutions and operate in accordance with both the policies of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group and the guidelines governing student organizations as set by the institution's management. Upon establishment, each fan club appoints a senior academic staff member as an advisor. This staff advisor provides mentorship, monitors the club's activities, and reports to both the institution and the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group to ensure transparency, compliance, and sustained alignment with Wikimedia’s global free knowledge movement.

These clubs not only provide a platform for students to engage in knowledge creation and dissemination through Wikipedia and its sister projects, but also foster leadership, digital literacy, and a deeper appreciation for Yoruba language and culture.

Objectives

The objectives of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group Wiki Fan Clubs are described below

To promote the use of Wikimedia projects by among the students in academic institutions
To bridge the gap between academic and the Wikimedia movemenet
To increase volunteer editors for Wikimedia projects
To increase the quantity of contents on Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects
To help students learn how to contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects
To promote the use of Wikipedia as part of students course work.
To increase the reach of Wikimedia projects
To advance the mission and vision of the Wikimedia Foundation, Yoruba Wikimedians User Group and the global Wikimedia movement.
Promote digistal literacy among the youth
To advance free knowledge in Yoruba language

Proposed Activities

The activities of the Wikifan club varies from one academic institutions to another. The common activities carried out in all the institutions include the following

Weekly meetups
Edit-a-thons to create contents
Participation in thematic Wikimedia contests such as WPWP, 1Lib1Ref, Wiki loves X Contests etc
Organing social events to attract and recruit new members
Organizing Capacity building (Training) sesions
Collaborating with Yoruba Wikimedians user group and other Wikimedia affiliates to advance free knowledge in Yoruba
Creating awareness about Wikimedia projects within the campus
The represent the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group where necessary
They organize other events that aligns with the vision of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group
