Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon

Hello!

You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.

In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store. Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.

If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.

Privacy

IIRC you were interested in privacy. PrivacyShield doesn't exist, so it's still illegal to transfer private data to USA and private data held by WMF must still respect EU law. Nemo 10:22, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Wikimania 2016 is almost here! Mjohnson (WMF) and I are running two workshops for IdeaLab during the conference, and you are invited to join us for either (or both!)

Creative Commons enforcement

Re [2], I had some success with standard DMCA and, note, Google Ads reports. Cutting their revenue streams is the first goal; policing the search index is a workaround. --Nemo 17:37, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

I tend to send messages or takedown notices to the website owner, or in some cases their hoster/registar/provider, but most of the violators are operating outside of the DMCA regions, such as some middle eatern countries, and due to lack of treaties, Google DMCA's are the next thing I can do. I wih there were a centralizes place on Wiki*Edia where we could coordinate how to send notices to different websites and hosts. Josve05a (talk) 17:41, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Archiving freely licensed open access papers

On your question about doi:10.1177/2053168017704800 and other freely licensed papers: no, I don't think Wikimedia projects are a suitable place where to store papers per se. It's better to use specialised tools, as recommended by well-known tutorials. Remember that there are millions such documents.

It's useful to archive papers from hybrid journals publishers, such as the one you linked, because their publishers are usually truly terrible at distributing free works. Each author and institution is supposed to archive their own works already, but if you find something interesting which is not archived elsewhere then I recommend that you just upload it to https://zenodo.org. --Nemo 08:18, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

@Nemo bis: At least when it asks me to check if a doi (which is already entered in the article) is free or not. Random OpenAcceess-URLs can be left for others to add. A simple tool that asks med to check/confirm if an already added identifier is free/open access (to add e.g. doi-status=free) is a great tool in my opinion (so, if there were any option to only get those results, would be awesome!)  :) Josve05a (talk) 20:42, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Are you asking to only be shown cases where the tool would add doi-status=free? Honestly I'm not particularly interested in implementing such a feature, because I can do such edits much faster with the bot.
