Steward requests/Permissions

Requests for permissions is a page to ask for sysop/admin, bureaucrat or CheckUser access to any Wikimedia wiki where no local means exist to do so yet. A steward will only give you access if your wiki has no bureaucrats (someone who can make sysops). If your wiki has a bureaucrat, please use the requests for adminship page on your own wiki instead.

For urgent access (to combat ongoing large-scale vandalism), you may ask on the #wikimedia or #wikimedia-tech IRC channels instead.

All requests presented here should be archived, after they are processed.

Current requests for permissions

Please add information in the header for which language do you want your sysop/bureaucrat status. Please note that all adminships are subject to approval by the local community. If you are granted adminship and a complaint is later filed against you, this may be revoked immediately pending a vote (like en:WP:RFA) to ensure the community on your wiki supports your request.

Don't forget to inform your local community that you're requesting this status, and link to the appropriate request from this page. A steward will inform you when you have been made an admin/bureaucrat.

Please put your request at the end of one of the sections below.

Boilerplate for request for permission

You may want to fill it with your own information and use it. It contains three required points which stewards need to know for processing your request.

Project name
I request sysop access on XX.(project name).
*language code: xx
*local request page: xx:Project:XXXX
*My userpage on that wiki: xx:User:Your username
Thank you. --~~~~

You need to replace all of "xx" with real pages like ja:Project:管理者への立候補.

For the policy to get CheckUser status, see CheckUser Policy.

Checkuser rights request

Anthere recently announced that the checkuser policy had become official [1]. The checkuser policy allows arbitration committees to designate users whom they wish to utilize checkuser. The en arbitration committee has had lengthy discussions on this matter, with Jimbo's full knowledge and participation. We have selected the following users, all arbitrators, as our initial group:

I will be happy to do this provided that no one opposes granting these admins these powers. As in any steward move, it should be open for discussion here. Remember, we are not discussing the rule, but rather if, given that Checkuser rights exist, these people should be granted them and for how long. Danny 02:40, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think that this new priviledge should be used very conservatively. With that in mind, I would like to suggest that instead of large group of five new editors with the capability to use Checkuser rights, that the en.wikipedia should start of with just two new additional editors with the capability. As a suggestion for which ones, the two who have been ArbComm members the longest. BlankVerse 10:20, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I oppose. I suggest waiting for the Arbitration Committee elections (or appointments) in December, and granting it to people who become arbitrators. Two of the people mentioned above (Kelly and Jayjg) have only temporary positions (as they were appointed by Jimbo Wales), out of process with how the other arbitrators were chosen. I think the English language Wikipedia can survive until the new Arbitration Committee members take their seats. Talrias 12:15, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Talrias. Two out of those 5 people I do not trust to use the privelege responsibly. --Node ue 01:18, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I quite agree with Talrias. — Dan | Talk 19:58, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Talrias. (insert substantial reasoning here). I'd like to see the "kinks" in the policy worked out too, but that's more of a wish, I suppose. WhiteNight T | @ | C 02:29, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Despite the fact that there is Board-approved policy on this (meaning that this request should have been procedurally granted without delay instead of creating yet another discussion of a matter that is supposedly already completely resolved), I am withdrawing my name from this request in the hopes that doing so will perhaps accelerate the process of getting someone to help David Gerard deal with the huge tide of work to be done on en. If and when you people actually agree to follow policy, I'll resubmit the request. Kelly Martin 15:30, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
But Kelly, that's silly - only Raul has actually been "elected". Either we strike four of the five names, or none at all.
86.129.159.92 09:44, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The chief problem with this request that I see is that we haven't yet published the 3 months in the past and longer logs of all the previous requests (requests, not results of the check), so the community can't see how the ability is being used or misused. Many of our problem areas are where we don't have broad oversight (deletion, visible to only admins, deletion of images, visible to nobody, because the image is gone). Broad community oversight and ability to correct is the core of how the wiki social controls work and it's absent here. Jamesday 16:25, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Public logs? YMBJ. These are not wiki controls; they are not wiki tools at all. They are for very very highly trusted individuals to take some slack from the developers. They are nothing to do with the wikis per se.
86.129.159.92 09:44, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm unstriking Kelly Martin. Following our current policy, please link to the local announcement of the Arbitration Committee on en.Wikipedia, that en:user:Raul654, en:user:Fred Bauder, en:user:Kelly Martin, en:user:The_Epopt and en:user:Jayjg, all members of the ArbCom, should be granted this status. Please move all the relevant discussion to the local village pump. Datrio 15:39, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What local discussion? The policy says that the arbitration committee is to decide who gets it. We agreed on our private mailing list (prior to the finalization of the policty) which 5 people to include in the initial batch. Once the policy announcement was made by Anthere, I put in this request in here, and announced it on IRC and w:en:goings-on, and the signpost tip-line. Raul654 00:19, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'll also add that I agree completely with Kelly Martin - this request should have been granted as a matter of procedure, and instead the stewards are enforcing policy as they see fit instead of what it actually says. Raul654 00:21, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
So you admint you made your descision before recent events. I would suggest reviewing it in the light of the current situation.Geni 00:42, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course we discussed and decided things before the policy was finalized. The policy has been under discussion for something like 2 months now. We started discussing things weeks ago when peopel were yelling at us because of vandalbot attacks that could not be stopped without David Gerard running check. People were screaming more people to have permission to use it. The fact that it took them so long to officially announce policy should not be an impediment for us figuring out what to do when it finally did pass; to say otherwise is just plain dumb. Raul654 02:03, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The situation two months ago is not the sitation now. People may have been asking for more people to have cheackuser but they were not asking for all the people on your list. You must deal with the situation here and now. This means accepting Kelly Martin's withdrawal. Any other course of action is less than optimum. You know as well as I do that you can get by on less than five.Geni 02:47, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have no qualms about Kelly withdrawing her name from consideration; why Datrio restored it is beyond me. However, the point remains that there is a request for 4 users on the english wikipedia to be granted this power; a request which follows policy to the letter and which should already have been granted with little fanfare. Raul654 03:01, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
heh going by my past experence on requests for permission a delay of a few days is nothing out of the odinary although that was quite a while ago.Geni 04:08, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Here is what CheckUser_Policy#Access says, "On a wiki with a (Wikimedia-approved) arbitration committee only editors approved by arbitrators may have CheckUser status. They should be at least two so that they can mutually control their activity. After agreement, simply list the candidate on Requests for permissions" FredBauder 03:42, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

stewards are allowed some leeway. However it seems fairly simple. At least one memeber of the comittee who wrote that policy is a steward. Ask them to sort it.Geni 04:08, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should have a project Request for adminship page in which every user interested can request admin status and the others will vote for him. More than that, three of you ask here adminship. Are users agreeing with this? Also, after making the RfA page, link it at top in the right section. -Romihaitza 18:26, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cree Wikipedia

I would like to request sysop/bureaucrat or admin access on cr.wikipedia

 • language code: cr
 • local request page: none exists
 • My userpage on that wiki: cr:User:Nickshanks

There are no admins on the Cree wikipedia, and nor are there any registered users who speak the language (!). I would like to do some housekeeping (deleting junk pages), and try to recruit Cree speakers from other websites who can contribute. Could I be given admin or preferably bureaucrat powers on that wikipedia? I'm not sure how to go about that given that there are no existing admins nor place to ask, so I ask here. — Nicholas Shanks 20:03, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll fulfill this request, just please put the following (translated) notice on some local page (prefferably your translation of Wikipedia:Administrators:
User:Nickshanks has been made a sysop on the Cree Wikipedia. If you oppose this idea, please notify Wikimedia stewards at m:Requests for permissions.
Well, that's all. You're now a sysop, good luck on the project. Datrio 20:11, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should have waited for the user to have created the page and made the request Datrio. I think, as a matter of respect for editors over there, that if the page is not created and his name added in the next few days, I will unsysop him. So, please do not archive this page. Ant
 • Oppose. User does not speak language. Simple "housekeeping" isn't a valid reason to request adminship -- pages needing deletion can be reported on Meta. Previous cases where people who speak little or no of the language have been sysopped have sometimes been very bad (na: w/Belgian man, mi: w/Perl and later Robin Patterson). --Node ue 01:16, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing Node's oppose, and the fact no Wikipedia:Administrators page was created, I'm desysopping Nickshanks until further notice. Datrio 16:51, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have given you sysop status on Azeri (but not on Turkmen). Let's see how it goes here first. Danny 02:49, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
 • Oppose. User does not speak language well. Has politicised the WP already by changing it from "Azeri Wikipedia" to "Azerbaijani Turkish Wikipedia", which no Azerbaijanis call the language. He's locked the mainpage so it says "Azerbaijani Turkish Wikipedia". I feel his status as a non-Azerbaijani should be emphasised here -- although Turkish is closely related, there are still many differences between the two which he is very bad with. I say we wait for a real Azeri, or somebody who is fluent in the language at least. --Node ue 01:16, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
First of all there is no advantage for me to be a sysop in Azeri wikipedia. This is from my talk page az:User talk:Ugur Basak Sizin çalişmalarizdan təşəkur elirəm. can be translated I thank you, for your works. az:Talk:Main Page Bir dağidici istifadəçi ön səhifəni xarablayıb, "bu Rus sozü du" filan səhifəyə artirib. this sentence is the reason for protecting main page, that sentence translates,"Don't take advantage of main page for your self purposes like 'This is a russian saying". (Also i had already said, below being a sysop in this wiki is better) Thanks--Ugur Basak 09:30, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
it's better for me. if you've askes me to choose one of them, i chose this. I hope i can attract more people to this wiki. Thanks--Ugur Basak 23:37, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
By the way i didn't write "Azerbaijani Turkish Wikipedia". This was there since i've edited Main Page.--Ugur Basak 19:05, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
 • Agree I believe Ugur can be a valuable help to revive activities in Azeri Wikipedia. There has been no real work on Azeri Wikipedia for months. I noticed a vandalization on the first page that was not fixed for days; it was obvious that there was no Admin. He was the only one that did something about it by removing the comment and protecting the Main Page. Although Ugur may not have the best fluency in Azeri, but has necessary understanding of the language to help us with administration and adding new materials. Please note that he is bringing a lot of knowledge from another well-established Wikipedia (Turkish). Calling Azerbaijani language ""Azerbaijani Turkish" in Turkey and up to a point in Southern Azerbaijan (Iran) is a norm and Ugur can not be accused of bringing his political views here based on that argument alone. I am glad that Ugur is showing interest to work with Azeri Wikipedia and I back his request.

My Best regards to you all for working on this project.

Mehrdad 15:55, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If Azeri is your native language, as it seems to be, I think you would make a much, much, much better sysop than him. And Turkey is not Azerbaijan -- what the language is called in Turkey is irrelevant. --Node ue 19:32, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I make a request to administrator status on the Russian WikiNews (ВикиНовости). This project (Russian WikiNews) exists since 1st November 2005 and has not yet Russian bureaucrats and administrators. I am working on the Russian Wikipedia since July 2004. I have more than 1200 total edits Ygrek in Russian Wiki and update 140 images on the CommonsWiki Ygrek in Commons. Currently I spend a time for the Russian Wikipedia, but in one’s subsequent work I would extend much effort on Russian WikiNews. At present, my efforts are directed on that the page was updated every day and has begun the high-grade independent existence. In the further I am measured to give more time in structural work on page. Ygrek 15:48, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Removal of access

Self-de-adminship can be requested here, and will be granted immediately. You may be asked to prove you are the same user on meta as on your local wiki first, by putting information on your talk page on your local wiki, that you're requesting de-adminship. To request the removal of sysop access from another user, please gain consensus on this on your own wiki first. All discussion must be kept on your local wiki. When it is finished and there is a community consensus to desysop a user, a trusted person from that wiki should just provide a link here to the discussion and a very brief explanation of what the results of that were.
