Brief report[edit]

The event was organized with the support from Department of Library and Information Science, Kakatiya University, Warangal. The organizing committee from the university is as follows:

  • V. Krishma Charya; Part-time faculty, Department of Library and Information Science, Kakatiya University
  • Dr Achala Munigal; Assistant Professor (Library and Information Science) / Asst. Librarian (University College of Science), Osmania University

The event commenced at 10:30 am with an opening ceremony, in which participants were briefed about program, followed by a speech by the Vice Chancellor of Kakatiya University, Prof. R. Sayanna, who emphasised the need of open access, and role of librarians in it. The first part was of the introduction to Wikipedia and its sister projects, Wikimedia Foundation, and the movement. Later the five pillars of Wikipedia, core content policies, and referencing system on Wikipedia were discussed. After that participants were introduced to the basics of Wiki Markup, and had a hands on session. Before breaking for lunch, various tools to find and add references were demonstrated. Post-lunch, after having brief practice session, introduction to Telugu Wikipedia, and usage of Google Input Tools to contribute to Wikipedia in various languages has been done. Before the valedictory ceremony, participants were explained about Creative Commons licenses. The ceremony was presided over by the Registar of Kakatiya University, Prof. K. Purushotham. A couple of participants also shared their experience and learning from the day. The program was wrapped with a brief about sock-puppetry, and channels to seek help including IRC, at 5:00 pm.

Brief report[edit]

The event commenced at 8:30 am with self-introduction of the participants and an informal introduction about the event. As the participants were a mix of both new and experienced users, they're divided into two groups. The group of experienced users comprised members from VVIT WikiConnect. This group was briefed about the identification of reliable sources, using Google books and Internet Archive, and then about using Standard footnote template for citing various pages at different instances from one book. Then these users picked up various books from the library with the help of librarian, and improved references on relevant articles. On a parallel track, session for the second group which comprised of newly registered users, started off with the basics. This group included researchers, teachers, librarian, and students. The session included discussion on the five pillars of Wikipedia, various Wikimedia projects, basic content policies, importance and types of sources, Wiki Mark-up, and different citation templates. The tools, Citation Hunter and Wikipedia citation tool for Google books, were demonstrated jointly for both groups. The participants had a hands-on session for a couple hours before being wrapped up with a brief about sock-puppetry, and channels to seek help including IRC, at 1:30 pm. The Librarian of Annamayya Library, and the Honorary President of The Annamayya Library Association, Lanka Suryanarayana, supported the event well, and provided refreshments to the participants at free of cost. Facilitators presented three books to the library as token of gratitude for their support to the event.
