Why do we need Capacity Exchange?

Capacity building is one of the Wikimedia Movement's central strategies (recommendation “Invest in Skills and Leadership Development”, Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy). Creating a platform where people can enter their assets, skills, and needs allows us to map capacities in real time. Through a unified channel, people, informal groups, and affiliates will be able to exchange skills, services, and resources.

How will this be coordinated with past, existing, and future capacity-building efforts?

We are reaching out to existing initiatives to assess their assets, needs, and perspectives on skill development. It is our goal to incorporate their input into the development of the platform. Also, we hope to help build a network of people interested in capacity building, enabling strategic development of a larger ecosystem around the topic.

We don’t need an external platform!

Wikimedians use external platforms in their daily work (Google Workspace, LinkedIn, Telegram, Whatsapp, Slack, Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Contrarily to these non-Wikimedia, proprietary, and often monetized softwares, Capacity Exchange aims to be both complementary to Meta and compatible with our movement values. We aim to provide an open, free, safe space specifically designed for Wikimedian exchange.
