Is this project grant funded? Please provide a link[edit]

Type of grant - On Wiki in Africa side, funded by annual grant. Some other groups are likely to use their annual support grant too. Last a dozen of groups also had a rapid grant to support that project and this is likely to be the same this year

Discussion[edit]

So... the details would have to be discussed with CentralNotice admin depending on what other banners are running at that time. The general idea is the following...

  • The project is meant to get people to participate to the effort around Mid-October / Mid December (this is not a contest, there is no hard set beginning and ending dates)
  • This is at the same time a content production drive and an awareness of the existence of Wikiquote. So we would like to run a banner which will be visible on Wikiquote (for wikiquote regularly active participants), but also on Wikipedia (to bring attention on the campaign)
  • This suggest a banner which will not be a high-frequency/full two-month duration, but rather a peak at the beginning (around early October), followed by a more discreet banner or some reminders during the rest of the campaign. I am aware of banner fatigue and that several banners are always running at the same time and do not want to impose.
  • The initial peak would ideally be made on all languages Wikipedia/Wikiquote to bring attention to the largest and foster the creation of a local effort. However, each community organize itself around local portals (about 10 languages participated the two previous years), so it feels that the lower frequency of banners in the second part of the calendar could probably focus only on languages in which there is a dedicated effort.
  • To be discussed...

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

added Wikipedia to the settings template. --Jeremyb (talk) 01:52, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you @Jeremyb-phone!! Islahaddow (talk) 19:54, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see the landing page is 0% translated 2 langs and 100% en, fr, ko, nl. Should some languages wait for the landing page to develop? which ones? @Islahaddow: --Jeremyb (talk) 23:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good question - SheSaid is also active on Italian, Ukrainian, Spanish, Serbian, Catalan, Igbo, Central Bikol (incubator) and Tagalog (incubator) ... we are hoping that more language communities will join this year. So the more it can be made available in, the better. Not sure how we do this though? Islahaddow (talk) 13:09, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
can you recruit translators for both the banner and landing page for those languages? is there a SheSaid mailing list? or at least there's a talk page. there's also a translators mailing list. --Jeremyb (talk) 16:13, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

translations can be started. go to message group statistics, click any language and then in upper right corner can choose a different language. --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

the logo on commons needs to be protected. (and the words on the bottom of the image are barely visible but I guess that's not critical for now) --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to upload a new one with the words taken off and the SheSaid larger, but the protection was in place. Am on the case, you should have a new, clean logo by the time you wake up ;) Islahaddow (talk) 13:11, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

banner draft is shesaid_2022. feel free to edit the banner. or leave comments. is pretty basic now. I didn't make a campaign yet. If banner is ready before I'm back on tomorrow then feel free to make one. (leave a note here first so we're on the same page) --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ummm ... sorry @Jeremyb - apparently I don't have the authority to view this? Can you help? Islahaddow (talk) 13:13, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
pointed you to the "Preview last saved version" link at the top of the page (tiny text) out of band. but for anyone else reading that's how you can preview without rights or even an account. (look on various devices, screen/window size, mobile domain and desktop, logged in and logged out) --Jeremyb (talk) 16:13, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(Direct link to the banner preview.) Ciell (talk) 15:31, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

some questions I had for user:Seddon (but others could answer too):

  • I linked from banner to Special:MyLanguage. is this right? how do you usually do this?
  • what is div.cnotice-misc-container usually used for? am I abusing it?
  • I see the scary warnings about RTL and LTR. what if some translations are one way and some are the other way? how do we abstract that out? what about directional text that's not getting translated like a hashtag? does that then get wrapped in an extra layer of dir="ltr" inside a bigger div that's sometimes one direction and sometimes another?
  • at the top it says "This banners is set up to run to loggedin users only". what does that mean? obviously I see the checkbox but is there something about the banner source that's specific to loggedin? --Jeremyb (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jeremy, Seddon is now in a different department, so let me try to help and answer:

  • There are different ways to do this, and yours is fine (tested just now).
  • cannot help you with the second bullit - the template is designed and tested to work on all devices, so I never remove anything that is not in the way.
  • RTL/LTR leave it as is (I know the text says differently) and it should work - have not heard of problems with that until now.
  • I did not design the banner template, but think this is because of the testing again, as well to make CN admins aware that we want to (severely) limit the number of banners we show to anonymous users to keep the fundraiser banners as effective as possible, so you really need to weigh what kind of banners to show to people without accounts. People will react less to a banner if there is a banner up for 183 weeks of the year already. Ciell (talk) 15:31, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Islahaddow & @Anthere,
I have now set up the campaign, banner preview is here. It will run for the by Isla mentioned languages above, plus English and French. Should I also include Korean? If more languages join, just let me know and I will add them to the targeted languages.
If the proposed banner works okay for you now (I understood there were some problems for mobile view with the previous version), I propose to enable it on Thursday and let it run till Sunday (so 4 days) - after that we can set it up with a lean diet, as Anthere suggests. I would not want to run this banner for not-logged in visitors, but for logged-in only.
Please let me know if I can enable it! Ciell (talk) 19:29, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @Ciell - thank you to you and @Jeremyb for all the help! It really is eye opening into what can be used in a banner and what cannot be. Please can we proceed with this version. Please let's proceed as you suggest - from Thursday to Sunday for 4 days to Logged-in users only. Thank you!! Islahaddow (talk) 08:14, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Islahaddow: great! Would you like me to include Korean as well? Ciell (talk) 08:35, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes please @Ciell Islahaddow (talk) 11:19, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks! I have enabled the banner, starting tomorrow. Ciell (talk) 17:04, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome ! Anthere (talk) 09:48, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Added Russian per Telegram request. Ciell (talk) 06:58, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
