Chapters Dialogue/Further Information/Factsheet
What is Chapters Dialogue?
What is the goal of the project?
The goal is to gain an overview in the universe of Wikimedia chapters and their numerous stakeholders (Wikimedia Foundation, the Affiliations Committee, the Funds Dissemination Committee and the project communities) and to uncover existing stories about how the chapters define themselves and their roles in the international movement, what interests they have and what challenges they might face. It will not only allow all of us to reflect the status quo of our roles and relationships, but will enable us to actively shape them in the future.
Who will run the project?
Nicole Ebber as Head of of the International Affairs Unit has initiated and is leading the project. Project manager Kira Kraemer is facilitating the collection of stories and insights. She is Design Thinking & User Research expert with three years professional experience, both running projects based on the user-centred approach and teaching the method to different types of organizations. Kira is not a Wikimedian which provides us with a neutral perspective of a researcher, without a personal Wikimedia history and agenda. Together, we design, realise and evaluate the project.
What happened already and what will happen next?
In the first research phase we collected input, questions and topics, discussed the questionnaire draft and kicked-off the project at Wikimania in Hong Kong where we conducted the first interviews with stakeholders and chapters.
Our ambitious plan is to interview ALL forty existing Wikimedia chapters. Chapters are requested to choose and appoint the interviewees themselves. The design of the process requires us to interview one board member and one staff member, if the chapter has staff. If there is no staff, the chapter can choose the second interviewee freely – this could be a second board member, a former member that has profound knowledge about the chapters’ history or somebody who has a deep understanding about the context, strengths and issues of the chapter. Interviews will be on-site and in person or via video conferences.
Additionally, we will interview several movement stakeholders: We will ask representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, the AffCom, the FDC and the project communities about their roles and relationships and find out what they need to enhance the collaboration with the local organisations.
How can I contribute?
We are hoping for your collaboration in arranging dates and meetings and we are really looking forward to meeting you and to hearing your story. You don’t need to prepare for the interview, however you can check out the questionnaire beforehand if you like. If you are not an interviewee, we still invite you to join the discussion and to contribute your knowledge – we value your feedback and ideas. You can either engage on the Talk Page or get in touch directly with Nicole Ebber (email) and Kira Kraemer (email).
