Black Lunch Table

The Black Lunch Table (BLT) is a project focused on the lives and work of black artists. BLT project is aimed at addressing the racial and gender bias on Wikipedia by encouraging Wikipedia articles about African American artists. The BLT brings people together through dialogues about writing, recording, and promoting inclusive art history. This maiden edition for Igbo Wikimedians User Group organised in collaboration with BLT is an event to celebrate Black History Month. For the contributions of African Americans to be seen or heard, Black History Month was established. It honors all Black people of the United States in history and contemporary, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

Among the notable figures often spotlighted during Black History Month are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who fought for equal rights for Blacks during the 1950s and ’60s; Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court in 1967; Mae Jemison, who became the first female African-American astronaut to travel to space in 1992; and Barrack Obama, who was elected the first-ever African-American president of the United States in 2008.

Outcome

Online event: The online event was a contest from 4th June – 4th July 2022. Instructions were given on how to create, translate, edit articles/items on Wikipedia (English and Igbo), Wikidata, and Wikiquote. As at 30th June, 2022, 01:25 WAT, Participants (93 editors) created 4,640 articles, edited 10,900 articles, and made a total edit of 25,000. See event dashboard for additional detail.
