Why help organize the FindingGLAMs Campaign in your local Wikimedia Community?

[edit]

The FindingGLAMs crowdsourcing campaign (date to be chosen at a later point) is open to anyone. Volunteers from all over the world can participate in improving Wikidata items of GLAM institutions. They’re not required to participate in an organized drive or sign up for anything.

The campaign can also be run in an organized way in a specific country, area, city, language etc. A local organizer team has the capacity to engage more volunteers, including participants from the GLAM sector without previous Wikimedia experience, and to spread information about the project in their own area.

A local organizer team can represent a user group or Wikimedia chapter, if one exists in the participating Wikimedia community. The team has knowledge about the local Wikimedia community and a contact network with cultural heritage institutions. It’s good if some of the team members have Wikidata experience, but it’s not necessary.

Before the campaign

[edit]
  • Add yourself to the list of coordinators.
  • Inform the local Wikimedia community about the campaign, e.g. on their Wikipedia’s Village Pump or in other channels that the Wikimedians use to communicate.
  • Encourage volunteers to translate the campaign manual.
  • Inform the local GLAM community about the campaign, using personal contacts and local social media channels.
  • Communicate about the project externally, e.g. via press releases and social media.
  • Plan events (monumental editathon, Wikidata training for GLAM…), if necessary apply for a minor grant.
  • Review the dataset index and add known datasets from own region, or edit information about those already included
  • Are there any datasets that could be uploaded to Wikidata? Contact us to work on them.
  • Contact owners of interesting datasets about releasing them under an open license.

During the campaign

[edit]
  • Be available to answer questions from participants, if necessary forward questions/feedback to WMSE.
  • Run events.
  • Post updates in relevant channels, that were used to highlight the campaign before it was initiated.

After the campaign

[edit]
  • Summarize the contributions of participants:
    • Publish statistics, insights, experiences etc. in own channels (social media, blog) to showcase the impact of the work and highlight the contribution by new and old volunteers to keep them engaged. The FindingGLAMs team will provide material that you can translate into your languages, and assist you in collecting statistics relevant to your community.
    • Follow up with GLAMs contacted as part of the campaign. Collect feedback about their experience. This is an opportunity to further engage with the GLAM institution.
    • Incorporate the learnings from the campaign into the regular work of the chapter/user group.
    • Follow up with WMSE about how the campaign went.
    • How many participants and edits?
    • Participating GLAMs?
    • Data providers contacted, status of collaboration?
    • Encountered problems, bugs in the Monumental-glam software. More information about how to do this will be provided.
  • Thank the users who made edits (on their Talk pages or via e-mail).
  • If a minor grant was used then a financial report must be provided to WMSE within one (1) month after the event.
  • Review the data introduced within the project in order to spot any problematic areas (obvious errors, duplicate items) and correct them.
