Description:

In this session, you will hear about experiences from France, Poland and Bolivia.

1. A look back at a pivotal year for french open content (Xavier Cailleau)

Open content is a particularly active, and sometimes controversial, topic in some European countries. In France, where copyright distribution societies have more power than necessary, a cultural exception still allows GLAMs to sell digitizations of public domain works.

However, more and more institutions are taking an interest in free licenses because they are concerned not only with the accessibility of knowledge, but also with its online visibility.

We, at Wikimedia France, decided to launch the Label Culture Libre last year to reward those GLAMs that opt for open content and contribute to Wikimedia projects. Because who else would?

On April 25, 2023, after analyzing some twenty applications, the jury presented the very first institutions to be awarded the Culture Libre label at the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art in Paris, in front of ministerial officials, agents and directors of cultural institutions. The event also saw the launch of the Observatoire de l'Open Content, whose mission will be to act as a reference body on scientific and cultural open content issues. Links:

A year made all the more important by the fact that, in September 2022, the French Ministry of Culture published a few discreet but decisive lines in its budget for a project to open online national collections... The project is still under arbitration...

The session will look back at the highlights of these projects, their objectives, the political and legal context, the constraints and successes encountered, the outlook for the future and their potential application by other affiliates.

2. Small steps for big projects: Partnership between the FFMV and Wikimedistas de Bolivia

Presentation of the process of the digitization project carried out by Wikimedistas de Bolivia. This work was established thanks to the alliance with the Flavio Machicado Viscarra Foundation (FMV) to develop the digitization process focused on documents and documentary records of Bolivian women in different fields of art and science. It started with a case of digitization of a publication related to the first woman lawyer in Bolivia. This document was identified thanks to a publisher on the other side of the world and highlighted the importance of its digitization.

In this way we were able to perceive the impact of the FFMV repository and the possibility of extending its reach in the digital environment.

3. Do's and Don'ts in GLAM-Wiki: Lessons Learned from a Fresh Perspective

It's been two years since I started working at Wikimedia Poland. When I began my role as a GLAM-Wiki specialist, I was a complete novice, and I had to learn many things by trial and error. Perhaps it was a bit easier for me to grasp some concepts due to my previous years of work in a museum, but Wikimedia is an entirely new world. I quickly learned that failures teach us more than successes, or at least we tend to remember those lessons better. That's why I'd like to share my experiences, but it's not the main goal of this presentation. I would like to use this approach to encourage participants to engage in deeper reflection on their own dos and don'ts. I hope this will be an opportunity for our collective discussions during the conference about how our experiences vary and whether they can serve as a shared lesson for us.
