Request changes

[edit]

We understand that sometimes plans change. Please use this section to request approval for changes to your grant’s budget while your project is in progress. Any variation of 20% or more to any line item in your budget must be approved by staff here before you make the change (for projects with budgets of $15,000 or more, the accepted variance is 10%).

Budget change request

[edit]

It is requested to redistribute the resources as follows:

  • Project leader: $21850 (+$12250)
  • Research assistant: $0 (-$12300)
  • Student assistant: $8150 (+$50)

Rationale

[edit]

It was not possible to find a research assistant as hoped for initially. The open position in the research group of the project leader has only been filled this month (June 2014). While the researcher has a suitable competence profile, it is not expected that he will be able to make contributions to the project in the remaining project time (since he has just moved internationally and has other duties to attend to first).

Therefore, the work planned for the research assistant is now done by the project lead. It can be seen from the project activity as documented in the midterm report that this is indeed the case (for example, the project lead has made more commits than all other contributors together).

The "student assistant" position planned for initially is now filled by a PhD student (Julian Mendez), who is could also be called a research assistant (since he is mainly a researcher, not a student, under German law). Julian is working as a subcontractor of the project lead. His activity matches the amount of found that had been allocated to student assistants initially, but he cannot increase his efforts beyond that (since he is working part-time in other positions). Therefore, it is not possible to increase his workload.

In addition to the staff planned in the project, two student assistants (Fredo Erxleben and Michael Günther) have joined the team but decided against becoming a member of the IEG-funded team (which would have certain legal/tax ramifications for them). They could be funded through the project lead's research grant instead. Thus, none of the IEG money is paid them.

Some of the funds allocated above will also be spent for travelling to Wikimania, since none of the project members receive any Wikimedia scholarships for this.

I'm approving this request, and will update the table above to reflect this change. Thanks very much for documenting it here! Siko (WMF) (talk) 19:43, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
