Daily Crossword Puzzle
Crosswords are just an excuse to learn new interesting words. The idea is simple. Just select curious words in the Wikipedia. Add a definition that doesn't mention the word. And a link to its wikipedia page. Make a big list so the program does not have to repeat any word constantly. A program should randomly compose a new crossword to fill in at the touch of a button. And inside the shape that we want it to fill in.

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?[edit]

For students and middle class professionals with time to waist.

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?[edit]

any language

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?[edit]

They usually communicate with each others by email, Facebook, at school and parties.

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?[edit]

They would improve their vocabulary & knowledge in trivial things that extend beyond their specific areas of knowledge. The serendipity of new ideas, new areas of interest, new initiatives...

Project idea[edit]

What language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?[edit]

catalan, spanish, english

How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?[edit]

by a new daily crossword puzzle at Wikipedia's Main Page

Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?[edit]

Someone gets interested in solving a crossword. They activate the link of a new word that they didn't know. Send the crossword puzzle to friends. And talk about the subject.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?[edit]

The main idea is to learn to use Wikipedia as a tool more frecuently.
So, when expanding our needs we would be also expanding our use of it.
A background idea would be that Wikipedia is also helping us know more about our own language and ourselves...

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?[edit]

Do you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
As an unemployed programmer, I have built these crosswords puzzles many times.
They construct all the puzzle based on the pattern that we choose.
I would only need a good database of interesting words with their definition and a link to the article.
When the program proves to work fine, it just has to generate a new puzzle every day and publish the graphic and the definitions on the main page.
The program could be built in perl and the publishing done in html.

About the idea creator[edit]

I like to read Wikipedia's Main Page for the same reasons that this proposal has.

I need people to choose interesting words.
I need experience in using the Wikimedia database, experience in making the program run every day and in getting a place in the Main Page.
Maintainance of the program should be no problem.

  • Researcher i would definitely be interested in solving a crossword such as this one and i'm sure many students would love this and consider it a fun way to improve their vocabulary. Mahima615 (talk) 15:40, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
