Audience[edit]

Who are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?[edit]

College students and faculty members

In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?[edit]

English, Hindi

In what ways does this group communicate with each other?[edit]

Lectures, demonstrations at the college and Social Media (emails, WhatsApp, Facebook etc.)

What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?[edit]

Students are always looking for information as they need to take exams and prepare assignments, project reports and surveys all the time. Wikipedia can act as the starting point for all their searches and provide them with useful sources for further exploration.

Project idea[edit]

What language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?[edit]

English, Hindi, Commons

How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?[edit]

We will communicate using both online (emails, WhatsApp, etc) and in-person modes.

Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?[edit]

This idea will help Wikipedia in the following ways:

  • First, it will create new readership
  • Second, it will motivate some of these readers to become contributors
  • Third, they will acquire skills for uploading media and editing, and,
  • Last, there will be an increase in the number of contributions.

Steps for Implementation

Step I - A call for WikiCommons Workshop and Photo walk will be sent out to various colleges of Haryana.

Step II - Existing Editors will be invited to deliver a lecture to the students at Dyal Singh College, Karnal, introducing them to WikiCommons and what they can do with it.

Step III - The students will be taken for A Photo walk in different parts of the city Karnal and encouraged to take photographs of important landmarks, buildings etc.

Step IV - A post Photo walk demonstration of various tools used for WikiCommons will be held to acquaint the students with the technical aspects and help them in uploading the images from the photo walk.

How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?[edit]

We will evaluate the awareness level of the students by asking them to fill a questionnaire after the lecture. We can call the project a success if we are able to get at least

  1. 40 participants
  2. 20 new contributors
  3. 100 image uploads

Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?[edit]

Yes. I can implement this idea. We Have 1. Experienced Wikimedians to share their technical expertise with the students. 2. Professional Photographer willing to help the Participants with their photography skills during the photo walk. 3. A projector enabled Seminar room for the Lecture. 4. Internet enabled Computer laboratory for the technical session. 5. Local volunteers for help in organizing.

We Need 1. Financial assistance for arranging the lecture, photo walk and demonstration. 2. Request letters for permission to take pictures of various institutes.
