What problem does this solve?[edit]

At workshops and conferences, many participants are not admired adequately for the work they did, or the skills they learnt. Lack of encouragement and motivation may lead the participants to trivialize their achievements, causing decreased enthusiasm to learn or work further.

What is the solution?[edit]

Create a 'wall of compliments' where the participants can write compliments in general, or compliments to encourage specific people or ideas. The participants are given post-it notes, on which they can write any compliment of their choice and stick it onto the 'wall of compliments'.

General considerations[edit]

  • Make enough pens (sharpies) and post-it-notes available for participants to write on the wall of compliments.
  • It is ideal to have the wall at the main conference areas where it easily catches the attention of the participants.
  • Have a meetup policy that prevents participants from writing de-motivational or indecent comments on the wall of compliments.
  • Encourage participants to take any compliment they find interesting and keep it as a souvenir.
  • Post-it notes in multiple colours will make the wall look beautiful :-)

When to use[edit]

  • During conferences, as a fun activity.
  • During meetups and workshops to encourage the participants and to admire their work.
