Activities and lessons learned
This section describes what the grantee did, and what the grantee learned from implementing the project. This section should be useful to others implementing similar projects and is an opportunity for the grantee to reflect on the project's performance.
- Provide a detailed list of activities performed to complete this project, descriptions of these activities, and the amount of time spent on each activity. This section should also include a list of participants, or a link to pictures, blog posts, or videos from the project or event.
- The aim was to give a spoken and with visual overview of Wikimedia Foundation to students, educators and other attendees (Talk Wikimedia) and then offer a training through a guided edit-a-thon (Wiki Edit-a-Thon). Talk Wikimedia and Wiki Edit-a-Thon did take place in institutions or in places arranged for students to attend.
- Koforidua Senior High Technical School - span about 2 and a half hours in an informal setting with 11 final year students of the school in a classroom block with access to wireless internet.
- All Nations University - For two Saturdays in 2 weeks, met in, first, the University's Auditorium, then the ICT laboratory of the university, with both events led by Billy James of National Society of Black Engineers with over 30 in total attendance. Spent over 3 hours each Saturday assisting and teaching attendees the use of WMF project sites.
- NSBE Conference - All Nations University College - Talk Wikimedia with in total over 60 students in attendance from Ghana Senior High Secondary School and Koforidua Senior High Technical School.
- Koforidua Polytechnic - Talked to a student of the institution about Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Student finally donated images of the campus to Wikimedia Commons and improved the article about the polytechnic
- University of Ghana (hosted by Google Ambassadors) - About 3 hours in an I.C.T lab were spent with 13 participants in introduction and training to edit. All students who attended were from University of Ghana.

- - Participants - Dieu-Donne Gamele, Nii Arday Ardayifo, Nachinaba Richard, Owoh Chunekwu, Agbeshie Desmond, Seade Caesar, Appiah Ama Ivy, Akakpo Wisdom, Elikplim Ahlibi, Omane Ossei-Poku, Kenneth Bayelle, Nustuglo Richmond, Marcel Okorie.
- Methodist University (hosted by Barcamp Accra) - About 2 and half hours were spent in all. Talk Wikimedia reached about 40 people but the Wiki Edit-a-Thon session hosted only 16 people.In attendance were students from Methodist University, University of Ghana, and Keta Senior High School.

- Barcamp Kasoa - This did not take place in a school but a church auditorium where the Barcamp was being held. Talk Wikimedia reached about 20 people but the Wiki Edit-a-Thon session hosted only 6 people. Kasoa Wikipedia article was used as an example and useful edits were made to it. In attendance were students from Tema and Accra Senior High Schools, some politicians and the general public.

- Central University, Tema (hosted by Barcamp Tema) - Talk Wikimedia took place with over 50 in attendance. Interested persons at the event were followed up with personal emails on introduction to Wikipedia and contributing to articles.

Online Projects Part of the Outreach
- Wikinews Ghana’s Election - About 10 politicians-related articles were improved and a few others were started in connection with the election.
- Wikibook Asanka
- Partnerships - GhanaMusic.org (MiPROMO Ghana)
- Initiated by Oral Ofori, partnered with Nii Abbey, the founder and CEO of GhanaMusic.com. Looking forward to putting many contents about Ghanaian artistes and other celebrities onto Wiki Commons for use in the public domain and in Wikipedia articles. Talks currently ongoing on ways to best leverage their archives for use on Wikipedia. Content promotion on Facebook, funded by MiPROMO, pushed Planning Wikimedia from about 170 likes to over 1,800 in less than 2 weeks.
- English to Akan Translations
- Spent about 20 hours improving the English to Akan/Ewe/Ga glossary in the translation toolkit of Google, purposely to help fasten and ease translation and article writing in the local Akan, Ga and Ewe Wikipedia's.
Active improvement reduced as future of the Akan Wikipedia not encouraging.

- What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects? Consider the following questions and respond with 1 - 2 paragraphs.
- What went well?
- Organizing the lecture events and coordinating activities relating to them went well with the support from individuals, local organizations and educational institutions.
- Lecture at events was a success with access to internet and audio-visual systems.
- Social media reach outs (via blogger, and social media handles like Google+, Facebook, etc) paid back so much well in getting interested ones on board than the 'traditional' way of reach outs
- Content promotion or ads on Facebook reached out to over 1,500 persons in less than 2 weeks, far more outweighing persons we could reach over the 5-month outreach program.
- What did not go well?
- Though many were in attendance at events, subsequent contribution by the individuals is low.
- Power supply at certain parts were unpredictable and disrupted gatherings at some points.
- Time of outreach was unfavorable as many High Schools were paying more attention than ever to their final year students for their WASHSCE examination.
- Many of the schools were not willing to occupy their students with any external projects.
- Requirement of souvenirs from WMF was explicitly essential and even was a condition required for the commencement of the project. However, none got our hands, up till now. No updates currently received about the souvenirs in the last 2-3 months.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- - In a similar project, our major focus will have to deal with helping attendees develop heightened appreciation for the Wikimedia Foundation project sites. We believe with strong desire and understanding of the importance of the platform, learning to and eventually contributing will be spontaneous.
- - In addition, our goal will be to highly focus on using social media in reaching out to the majority of persons, since that is where almost everyone is available these days. Leveraging the power of media houses in the country will also be of prime target.
- - All souvenirs to be used for the project will be made in the country. Reliance on the WMF for souvenirs will be none. If no funding from WMF will be allocated for the making of the souvenirs in the country, then no project in turn, rolls out.

- Train students, educators and other individuals on how to use, edit and contribute to the wiki projects generally
- Focus on the editing and generation of Ghana-related articles towards the making of Wikipedia the prime online source for reliable and rich information about Ghana
- Focus on contributing Ghana's national and ethnic cuisine to Cookbook
- Recruit contributors who will cover Ghana's December 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections and submit articles to Wikinews and images to Wikimedia Commons
- Focus on gathering images of Ghanaian cuisine to Wikimedia Commons to support recipes submitted to Cookbook
- Publicize Portal:Ghana as an online hub for educational content covering our country
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.
- The goal to train students, educators and other individuals was achieved. At gatherings such as Barcamps, people of diverse professional specialty converge, thus the training reached students, educators and individuals.
- For instance, the Wiki for Election campaign focused in content generation, and article improvement/creation specifically tailored to Ghana and election-related. Our goal in this regard was achieved.
- Cookbook - Images of articles to be added on cookbook have been uploaded. Articles about these images being worked on.
- Recruited a few Ghanaians who helped in expanding articles relating to Ghana's presidential and parliamentary elections in 2012.
- Publicizing the Portal:Ghana, though done, yielded not the expected results. Our goal in this respect, we think was not achieved. Interestingly, our blog page yielded much fruitful results than the Ghana Portal page.

Over 25 persons signed up to Wikipedia and many others heard the good news about Wikimedia etc.
- Improve quality
Quality pictures and or articles were uploaded and started respectively during the outreach.

In total,  Senior High Schools (reaching about 50 students) and  Universities (reaching about 100 students) were reached.
- Encourage innovation
- Content promotion on Facebook moved the outreach a step further in reaching out the tens of hundreds of person. Introduced by MiPROMO, it was innovative enough to grab the attention of many and add them to our fold.
