YES

YES

Activities and lessons learned

[edit]

-Wikimedia Projects in Albania are quite new, so local contributors are trying to promote the projects with the focus on Wikipedia Albania. Part of the agenda were presentations and workshops for beginners. Also, we invited some experienced Wikimedians from Europe to share their experience how they started and to talk about their projects and how we can implement them in Albanian Wikiepdia. We understood from the questions raised by the participants that we should work more on the importance of Free Licenses like Creative Commons etc.

Activities

[edit]

We invited to apply Wikimedians from Albania and Kosovo and Europe to be part of the event and organize workshops, presentations and host infobooths, and they accepted these invitations. We gave all the support they needed to organize these sessions. Our documentation online can be found here on Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:OSCAL_2016 OSCAL2016 agenda is documented here: https://wiki.openlabs.cc/faqja/OSCAL_2016/Axhenda but below you can also find the session related to Wikimedia project:

  • Jan Louzek - Freedom of Panorama
  • Gwen Franck - Introduction to Creative Commons
  • Lars Haefner - Wikipedia – Making Albania Accessible
  • Arianit Dobroshi - Rethinking the Albanian Wikipedia
  • Kiril Simeonovski - 15 years of Wikipedia
  • Riccardo Iaconelli - WikiToLearn - Top class education goes open
  • Ismet Azizi - Wikimedia SQ Editaton
  • Wikimedia Meetup
  • Was also hosted a Wikimedia infobooth for both days.

Lessons learned

[edit]
What worked well?
Considering that there were around 350 participants, we think that during OSCAL were covered all the subjects that matter about Wikimedia, such as Freedom of Panorama, first steps on editing on Wikipedia, licenses, booth and meetup where people could also ask if they had another question or on which project to contribute. This was a good opportunity to promote Wikimedia projects and inspire people as well.
What didn't work?
Since back in OSCAL2016 the organizing team didn't have a lot of experience in using metrics tool to measure the articles, it wasn't easy to track the articles or other measurable contributions made during the conference days.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
Since all the events organized by Open Labs, including OSCAL, are organized on a volunteer basis, and OSCAL has more than 70 speakers and around 350 participants there was a lot of work to be done, and tasks to follow up before and after the conference. Unfortunately, the team did not have a dedicated group and experience to deal with Wikimedia grants, the team missed the deadline for the report of the grant that OSCAL received from the Wikimedia Foundation. This is definitely something which we will do differently in the future since now some of people who are part of the organizing team are experienced Wikimedia contributors.

It was ran a competition during OSCAL 2016 and as seen in the pictures here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OSCAL_2016_-_conference_moments_93.jpg, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OSCAL_2016_-_conference_moments_96.jpg, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OSCAL_2016_-_conference_moments_95.jpg

there were at least 15 people involved during this workshop.

Global Metrics

[edit]

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation
1. # of active editors involved 6 The event had speakers from Wikimedia Czech, Wikimedia Italia, Wikimedia Swiss and two administrator of Albanian Wikipedia.
2. # of new editors 5 During the event it was managed to recruit new editors thanks to the workshops and presentations hosted.

Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
Yes, because people who were part of OSCAL joined afterwords other smaller events that we organized afterwards, and some of this people are now very active contributors of the Wikimedia project.
